Default Nav idea

Maybe Lexus has found a way to either compress the info or allow the nav system to read a larger disk. I was reading the spec on the new LS and it has a HDD nav system listed. I did a double take when I first read it but does say HDD instead of DVD. Anyway if they have a update for us I for one will purchase it as long as it's resonably priced.

I was looking around and talking to a few friends in the automotive audio sector and they said that almost all the new nav/dvd players and major system head units will be coming with hard drives they said everyone is getting on the ipod band wagon and that everyone wants to make it the you can have a jukebox in your car, I am wondering since Lexus and toyota have said they will be using a HDD in the new autos that they have decided they can update the old systems. Who knows we could be the lucky ones, that can store songs on our nav systems.. I know this is dreaming but you never know. I am just sitting back and awaiting someones true words if this nightmare is going to be over for us with the HDD... Let me know if anyone hears anything...

I ordered the update for my 98 LS400 and it came in today. I'm working out of town until Friday and am going straight to the dealer from the airport Friday AM to get it put in (having some other stuff done at the same time).

There is a new highway around Charlotte that has gone in over the last couple of years (I-485) and the old version just showed me offroading through farm pasture when I was on it . I very much hope the update fixes it.

If you want to know if the update has a specific address in it after I get it installed (to see if there is detail added to a specific area you may be interested in), PM me with the address this weekend and I'll take a peek for you.

Got the update in the LS... One thing I'm not sure about is the version.

I had the 2002 or 2003 version (can't remember which) and there was one more available that I didn't upgrade to.

What exact date showed on the 'previous' latest version HD?

The date on the new one I just got shows July 2004 and I want to make sure I didn't get the wrong one.

Who has the (previous) latest version in and what date does it show?

Thanks in advance

Does the latest HD Navigation Update change anything of substance other than having the latest maps? For instance, are the maps significantly more detailed (especially outside metropolitan areas) or is everything about the same except streets constructed in the last 2-3 years are now accounted for?

To the best of my knowledge, 2003 was the most recent update until now. Though it does seem strange that they would update the maps in July of 04 and then wait until January of 06 to put it out. I hope that isn't the case because I'm seriously considering the upgrade myself. Though I'll probably still buy it regardless.
