Default Should I do my 60k service myself or take it in??

Whats up Guys my 01' GS430 is nearing its 60k day and yes I am a DIY guy, I have done all my oil changes, brake jobs (front and rear), plan to install my own coil-overs in a week, but I'm just not sure if the 60k is something that the dealership should handle..By the way I'm not big on having "dealership service records" because I plan to keep this car for quite a while...

Have any of you done your own 60k?

Mods I know this belongs in the Maintenance section but I really need some hits from the majority of people that browse this forum..Thanks!!

what's included with 60k service should be listed on some dealer's website.

if you are an average driver, you can probably just wait for 90k service, which will involve timing belt and water pump, major tune-up and etc.

DIY- you can change the fluid in your tranny, diff and radiator. check your drive belt, brakes and tires. also change your cabin ac filter and engine air filter.

then go ahead and say your 60k is done

I would let the dealer or certified lexus mechanic do it.. I changed my timing belt and water pump done at about 65k to avoid the big hit at 90k. I dicided on having it done at the dealer because i don't want any screw ups. In addition, if something went wrong with, you can take it right back to the dealer, and let them fix it. Hey you get loaners too. .

Since you're a DIY guy, you'll be fine. the 90k is the more important to have the dealer do because of timing belt.

If you are DIY-inclined, then by all means do it yourself and save the $. The big changes really come at around 90k, like the timing and serpintine belt (atleast that's when mine were changed out).

I agree with the DIY. But only if you are reasonably sure you CAN do it, and you take responsibility for anything that goes wrong. If you want the dealership to assume the responsibility, then let them do it

Changing a timing belt on our GS's at 60,000 miles is unnecessary in most circumstances, but would be warranted if a lot of time has elapsed since the last belt. 7 or 8 years on a timing belt regardless of miles would be where I draw the line due to age.

If I felt that I could not do the job correctly then it would be a "no-brainer".

Default 60k service?

I'm not a diy kind of guy,so I took it to the dealer and the dealer took it to me! I was qouted approximately $500., but when the deal was done it totaled $1200.(Ouch!) Keep in mind I had my plugs and serpentine belt changed along with switching to synthetic oil! The car run's much better and feels quicker in response! I didn't want to spend that much, but I have a piece of mind knowing that those parts were changed at the dealer and if anything goes wrong it's under warranty! -wringo

If you can tackle those items(brakes, oil changes, etc. ) then the 60k shouldnt be a problem

Timing belt and the water pump should be done by a pro ..less headache for you

I might leave the brake fluid change to the pros, but trans job is a waste to get done by the dealer.

It's easier than an oil change

And when you do your coilovers BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE WHEEL SENSORS

Get Amsoil buddy. It is the synthetic equivilent to the Toyota type IV tranny fluid. You will be happy with its performance. It says cleaner much longer, less wear, performance benefits, save you money.
