I would think you should get 10 years out of an Optima, especially at the price. Since its resistance supposedly starts out low, it should take a lot longer to get up to the point where it is dead. Coupled with the wound plates, it should last way longer than a regular battery because the typical mechanisms that kill a regular battery are just not there. So I can't figure what they could be doing to these things to have them dying prematurely. They're supposed to last thru 300+ dead/recharge cycles too.
I really don't want to be sorry I put one of these things in.

I wouldn't put my bet on the optima lasting after a few dead charges. The term "deep cycle" is a misnomer. It's just like any other battery, except it'll be able to handle a lower voltage drop. Other than that, its been tested to not last more than a few dead charges.

The real deep cycle ones are the ones in fork lifters or any other industrial machinary. They have heavy and huge and expensive.

Its the way it is

I just moved my Optima from my ES to my new GS300 Platinum Edition and still used the stock black box. It was a tight fit towards the bottom but it worked fine for me. I test fitted the battery first without the black piece but it just seemed like the nuts to tighten it down would go past the threads on the bolts so I just assumed the black piece was needed as a spacer of sorts. Looks fine and the cover is flush with the top of the battery.

Just got me a yellow top Optima last weekend at Sears. The did remove the black box the OEM battery sat in. I watched them put it in and they didn't have any problems securing the battery in place...I'll double check. I wish I has read this thread before...I hope I don't end up sorry for spending the extra $$ on the Optima.

No problems with my Yellow Top Optima going on 3.5 yrs now. As far as the tie down, a piece of wood like others have said should do it.

I;ve got Red Tops in my Miata and my Ram. No problems and each is over 3 years old. I trickle the Miata for a month in the winter,(storage), other than that I don't do a thing. Never had an issue.

If you do discharge it, you will need to trickle charge it with a proper charger. Do'nt rely on the alternator to kick it back up, it's offers an improper charge. Although the Optimas do last longer than standard bats as far as thumpin systems go, you still need to utilize common sense when using one.

Hey gsteg watch it. lol. Im just kidding. I work for johnson control im ashamed to say but i was actually glad to when i found out that i could get the yellow top battery right from the factory for 87 dollars shipped, and i didnt need anything it came with the yellow piece that simple snaps under the battery to raise it. It was a fresh battery. Ive ran optima yellow tops befor and never had a problem with them. the only thing that im upset with that i only can get 2 per year.

also let me know how u like those 01 tails when they arrive.

Many of my local dealers have stack of optimas ready to be shipped back to Optima for warranty.

Below 10.5v, the yellow top will start to fail. Once you go below that, the battery's potential is reduced from 100%. No longer can it have the same performance.

A year ago, everyone on the s2000 forum flamed me for telling them the exact same thing, saying how their new optimas are doing perfectly. Pass forward a year and now many of them are complaining that their optimas are dying (some have gone through two batteries within 2 years). Optima has built their reputation as a long lasting battery long ago. Their reputation has gotten big enough that some people aren't willing to acknowledge that the current optimas aren't going downhill.

Stick with regular battery that comes with a good warranty. It will last though many years.
