A while back I remember reading a post on this website that said that the fuel pump is actually cooled by the gasoline that it pumps, and if you run out of gas you'll also burn up your fuel pump. That was the explanation for why the gauge shows empty but there's still gas in the tank. I also have NAV, and was recently running so low on fuel that the NAV showed zero miles left on the tank for at least 20 miles, and when I filled up there were still about 3-4 gallons left in the tank (according to the car's specs and the amount that I put in).

Bottom line -- it'll cost big $$$ if you run out of gas and burn up the fuel pump in the process!
