Default Explain VVT-i

I know that many of our cars have VVT-i which I understand is Variable Valve Timing - intelligent. My questions are what is it? What does it do? How does it work? It seems to be highly sought after so how common is it? If it is rare, did I get lucky that both of my GS cars have it? I have performed a search on this but I obviously have not found my answers.

"VVT-i continually optimizes intake valve timing over a broad range of engine speeds. It increases torque at lower speeds and horsepower at higher speeds to improve engine performance and fuel economy, as well as help reduce emissions."

I did try the search and I did not find that thread. Thank you guys for the info. That helps. Again, how common is it? Approximately what percentage of 2nd gen GSs have VVT-i? Does it add to the value significantly if the car has it?

I do see now why I did not find the thread. I was looking specifically in the GS forum as I was not interested in what it did for other models but in hindsight, the explaination could be anywhere.

Thank you. I was not aware that it was on all of them. I thought it was something special on select models.

Isn't it Toyota's version of VTEC?
