Just received April issue of Consumer Reports today. Get your copy and review the detailed reliability ratings of GS and IS. IMO, get the GS4 - V8

Well heres the deal. for $14,000-19,000 you get a $55K GS 400, sure it's used might need a few repairs ($1,000 at most) or spend $14,000-19,000 and get a $19,000 car how about a Mazda 3?? No worries all under warranty. Great car my gf has one at !/2 the horsepower of my GS.

It depends on what you want or almost what you are used to. I drove a 91 300ZX twinturbo so I needed 300hp at $15,000 = GS4 with 95K miles. the value is there, shop records and owner info is important

I read before it is a $50K+ car so dont expect the parts to be cheap....but it is a toyota so dont expect it to be a "jag" I mean crap..

My GS400 is just about at 120K miles and 7 years old. I just replaced my starter this past month and while it was a little up their in cost. (Less than $700 with parts and labor) I drive my car quite hard with almost every suspension piece made for the car on the car. And when looking back on all the maintainence I've done, it is not much. (I've had the car for 6 years)

It comes down to what you want. Each call will have it's quirks and maybe some slight flaws, but the GS is a great car. I was sideswipe years ago doing 65 mph and my car barely moved. If I was in a smaller car I would have been pushed off the road.

If your wondering about costs of parts, when you get in this price range of luxury cars, parts will cost more, but that is a given. It's one of the prices you pay. But some things you can interchange with the toyota parts, like oil filters. All in all think about what you really want, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Think of the mileage you will drive over the course of a year and then factor in the tires you may want to use and how much mileage you will yield out of them.

If/when you purchase a GS400 and it comes that day to maintaince the car, when feeling down, just let the butt o meter take over as you WOT your GS down street.

Default Buy the GS400

I had a 98 GS400 that I just sold with 86K. Car was in excellent shape except for the sticky hood cable. I bought an 01 GS430 with 54K. The only reason I did the swap was for the different color combo.

I wouldn't have bought another one if I had problems with the first one..

I own 3 Lexus' - LX470, RX300 and the GS430. So far, so good. Lexus keeps me coming back.

78k on my 98 GS4. Replaced starter at 66k, paid a whopping $1000. Shame on me.

I have the low idle problem when AC is off, but it never seems to get any worse and has never stalled on me, though it has come close in slow traffic when I have to slam on the brakes. I too worry about keeping the car and sinking $1k into it every year for repairs -- might as well by something else at that point.

But it runs so nice, rides so nice, and since I already did the starter, I don't think that will be the case. Other problems no one mentioned were front end vibrations at 65mph that you can chase but never find....still got mine...and refuse to spend $1000 on the front end chasing it.

Lets see, I could go buy some little s-box for the same money this is worth and have a warranty... and a crappy ride, and no V8, and no killer stereo, and cloth seats, and road noise....
