So there is a chance that '01 430 that i was looking at was a navi w/o the ML? So I guess maybe i wasn't halucinating.

Well, it certainly seems that way, although this car is a 300 and the one you looked at was a 430. I guess it's possible that if you could get ML without nav in 01 (which I know for a fact is true) then maybe you could also have gotten nav without ML. Like I said, I've never seen a 430 equipped that way, but then again, now that we've seen a 300 optioned that way, anything is possible.

One other thing I was thinking about. There are a few threads floating around that describe the differences between the 98-00 GS400 and 01+ GS430 (DaveGS4 usually posts up the links when someone asks about the differences between the two). I'm pretty sure those posts include a list of standard and optional equipment for the 01+ GS430, including the various option packages and whether certain options were stand-alone or not. I've gotta run out right now, but I'll do some searching later.

Yea, i looked on the Lexus.com model library. It showed all the available options, but it didn't specifically show how they were bundled. Let me know what you find.

Tired Guessing! Don't Know what audio system do have on your GS? Simple call your lexus dealer Parts Dept. Give your VIN# and the manufacturer code (P) ex.P0172 on the
faceplate on your radio. If not on the 10 inch subwoofer on the back there a part# flip it and write it down.Some info.. Pioneer and Nakamichi system have 7 speakers and 10 inch subwoofer
on Mark levinson have 10 speakers and mark ML on the faceplate on the radio and in the speaker grille on both front door panel. Mark levinson came out on 2001 and its optional on all
lexus vehicle. Hope this help you a little bit...

because no where in the car can i find Mark Levinson logo
not on the face plate, nor grills

just wondering where the 7th speaker is though
i know there are 4 on the front doors (2 by the pillars and 2 on the door panels)

2 on rear doors
and 1 sub on the rear

so where is the 7th speaker?

Actually, the Nakamichi was only offered from 98-00. You have an 01, so it can't have Nakamichi. Because it appears that you don't have ML, you have the stock Pioneer system (which is called the Lexus Premium system). Sorry for all the confusion.

Yep, that's right. From 98-05, the base system was the Pioneer. From 98-00, the upgrade was Nakamichi. From 01+, it was ML.

just thought i'd chime in on this, ive got an 01 gs430 with nav and i dont see the ML logo anywhere on my stereo. it hasnt been tampered with because i took out the entire head unit to hardwire a sirius system in it and i could tell no wires had been touched. bottom left corner by the volume dial says "LEXUS Premium Sound" and it has other various symbols on the lower right but no ML anywhere on it.

Bingo. So there's the definitive answer. Apparently, regardless of whether the car is a GS300 or GS430, you could order ML or Nav as stand-alone options. I believe you could do this in 01 and 02, but starting in 03, you had to get both together (or neither).

and e, i could be wrong, but i thought since 02 they are together as package already, can't get them separate anymore. but could be wrong. either case it's rare
