Clean MAF Sensor
All,
Just wanted to let everyone know that CRC now makes a spray specifically to clean Mass Air Flow Sensors. I got it at Pep Boys $6.00 and cleaned my sensor this past weekend.
I bought my car back in November with 54K on it. I discovered that the previous owner had a put a K&N filter in it and was concerned that the oil had coated the MAF sensor. I replaced the K&N with an normal air filter and reset the ECU.
When I took out the MAF, one side on the wire (side facing the air inlet) was completely black and the other side was clean. The little resistors down the tube were dirty.
I cleaned the sensor and and left my battery disconnected for several hours. Well, nice improvement in acceleration. I was hoping to smooth out the idle with no headlights lights or a/c on but that didn't happen. I have reset the ECU in the past but never had an imrovement in overall acceleration like I did after cleaning the MAF sensor. It seems I may have picked up 1-2 MGP too but it is to early to know for sure. Plus the weather warmed up a little so I am running leaner because of that also.
Anyway, I think this is great preventative maintenace. Simple and inexpensive. Took about 20 minutes. The hardest part is getting the O ring to slip back into the hole.
Check out their website. The advertise a 4-10hp at the rear wheels improvement.

I'll be doing the RX and LX this weekend
Thought I'd share.

i've always just sprayed it directly onto the threads. no problems, but i made sure that the straw doesn't come in contact with the threads when i spray. the straw is about near the entrance of the MAS. so basically the threads are getting a shower, not a jet spray.

I have cleaned the MAF sensor on other cars. I don't know if it actually improves performance, more like it restores things to where they were when the car was new. Definately worth doing.

Restores to lie new service
I would agree it is not giving you any additional horsepower but rather restoring what may be lost. In my case, the car just feels more lively. Pretty simple process and fairly inexpensive.
I should have taken pictures but wasn't thinking.

Yes it is ..it has a plug attached to it as well as (2) 10mm bolts and a gasket ..dont overtighten and ruin the gasket

This is a handy thread. I cleaned my MAF sensor and throttle body this evening. Since no one sells crc MAF cleaner here, I just poured a small amount of the throttle body cleaner across the wires. Worked out just fine. The engine is more responsive and seems to idle and rev much smoother. Picked up some long lost pep too.
Don't know what I'd do without CL.
