First off, it's a Lexus, so why would you have to lie to anyone that doesn't have one?

And if they do have a Lexus, you're going to be caugh in the lie so once again, why lie?

Third, why lie? You're driving a Lex, that puts you in a class above most.

Lastly, if someone is lying to people they don't know, do you really think they'd own up to it to people that they knew HERE???
no offense, but these comments sound like something you would hear in a BMW forum. The marque and/or year of a vehicle you own doesnt give you status or class.

The point of this thread I feel is not to try and fake the funk about what year your car is. A person could have the first Lexus ever built, and as long as it's clean I dont really care what year it is. On the other hand, a person could have a vehicle that is a year or two old and if they trash it they dont have my respect. I am proud to tell people I have a 2K GS4 when they see how clean it is...oh and I have 01+ tails.

I get asked what year is it? And I always tell the truth and say it's a 98', and they go "Damn, that's a 98'??"

People seriously think I'm rich and I'm broke as a joke. Just because it's a clean Lexus it must be a $40k+ car. I bought my car two years ago for $20k. I needed a reliable car and had $20k to spend. It was either a new Honda Accord or I could buy the car I've been dreaming about since senior year.

It's reliable as a new car and plenty of people mistaken it for an 04'.

The funniest thing for me was when guys would pull with a really confused look on their face, and then ask the year. After I said 98, they would be EVEN more confused as to how I had the 2001 tails, AND THEN how the hell they got to be all read.

I never lie, there is nothing to be ashamed of and if you encounter someone that really knows cars you look downright stupid when you get caught in a lie.

most people i tell out right: "2000 limited edition, 75k miles..." with my thrifty self, i'm usually then tempted to add "one owner, with service history, for under $20k".... most people are *far* more inquisitive about the car than i am/was. but i'm learning <wink>

oh, warm fuzzies to the author of this thread - i know whatcha mean (about people's deflated perception). but i don't internalize it (AT ALL). cuz i'm usually not the least bit curious about what they're driving, how it looks, etc. LETS JUST BE GRATEFUL TO HAVE/MAINTAIN A RELIABLE, WELL APPOINTED CAR ...

when i first got my car and took it to school, one of my friends walks up to me and asks me what year it is.

I say "05" and then look over at my girlfriend and we both laugh (because its a 98).

He notices us laughing and says "Liar, it's an 04 isn't it?".

Made me feel

sometimes i feel a little ashamed cuz it is a 99 (old) with a few miles (101k) when dealing with the dealership or some new car shop, but to real car enthusiasts who appreciate cars for what they are i feel proud that i have such a clean and timeless looking car that is the age that it is.

I don't see any point in lying about your car's age, if the person looking at your car thinks the car looks new - I take pride in saying my car is 2002, but I take such great care of it, it looks like a 2006.

good thread to bring back from the dead

98 with 80k miles on it.

Car is in great shape, so I tell people its a 10 year car and they don't believe it. And yes, I feel good about that.

There's no need to lie about a car's age. It's more like lying to yourself afterall.

I don't lie about it's age...it is what it is. Just like many of you guys I try to take good care of my ride and all previous rides. It's funny because I use to have a 1992 Acura Legend for about 4 years (19-23) and many people asked me "what year is that car? It looks great!" This was coming from people with new(er) Acura TL's at that time. Many loved that car and it too had a timeless design...I miss it too sometimes.
