The latest issue of one of the car mags (Motor Trend ??) had a shoot-out between a WRX, 330xi & an S4 (which won, btw). They clocked the Bimmer at 5.7 for 0-60 ??!! WTF ?! The S4 did 5.6, and the WRX did 5.4. The 330 was all-wheel drive, the coupe doesn't even pull lower than 6.3 at best, and weighs 200 lbs. less ?? So technically my GS430 is SLOWER than an all wheel drive 330 !!! Those magazines are great !

haha i know, I raced 330ci and 330i which both of them are faster than xi. (lighter) where in the world can a 330xi pull 5.7? same thing with S4 the fastest S4 manual I raced is about 6.0 5.4 is just pure rediculous. give me a break

I think they mentioned in a pervious thread that they dropped the clutch at 5000 rpm!!! dont know many that will do it like that...and have much of a transmission after a few months.

wrx is a sleeper. wrx alot of bang for the buck. But I didnt think it would have been quicker than the S4. 330xi had to be a one off selected by BMW. Stock S4 time seems about right on a perfect launch. S4 stock, run 13.9 best conditions and usually average 14.1-14.4 depending on driver. but that 330xi man, musta been on some steriods.
Plus the S4 with its AWD is a ***** to launch correctly. Very easy to bog. Pomona Raceway was notoriusly sticky and the S4's had trouble launching, whereas Carlsbad is less sticky and more to the AWD liking.

after reading RON430's (i think) recent detailed comparisons of many many mags on performance #s, i try not to look at their published #s too seriously now.

WRX claims to have 227 hp. A very reputable tuning shop in So. Cal (i'm not suppose to give names) supposedly dynoed a new WRX sedan. It got something like 210rwhp so 227 is seriously underrated.

Not to mention removing the cats produce close to 280.

Not to mention how easy it is to upgrade engine and turbo parts for the WRX.......

the scariest sleeper right now. Wait til LanEvo7 at 2002 March.

Ive raced a 2001 S4 my friend has one and I can tell you its not as fast as the GS400 yes it was a very close race but at the end the GS has way more torque and pulls alot harder than the S4, I highly dought that the 330xi does that kind of time its just not realistic I mean the M3 has almost 100hp gain and it does the 60 in 5.0-5.2 and that car was built for speed so I think they must have mistaken the times there. As for the WRX amazing car for the buck its quick its nimble and man it can move if it was my choice that car would be my number on choice for that category considering its about $15,000 cheaper I can make that car faster and better looking than any of those cars that they tested with the extra 15 grand I saved and I would probably end up with an extra 1000 dollars for gas

Glanced at the review but didn't concentrate on the numbers. I guess I want to believe that the mags aren't cooking things so the only conclusion is the makers are sliding in ringers. I am not a conspiracy buff but how much evidence do we need to see? A shame really, would have been nice to trust these things but if the mags are incapable of calling a selected vehicle an unfair comparison, then I guess we all just have to ignore the numbers they publish. I guess we are getting a bit of what we deserve. All the focus on 0 to 60 is getting everybody warped. More to a car than that. But you have to wonder if any bimmer drivers are going to take their cars to the drag strip and then get tough with bimmer like the Mustang (and to a lesser extent Miata) owners did. Lousy end to a lousy week.

just got my car and driver with that article. Buddy of mine recently got his WRX and is doing 5.6 0-60 without any mods consistently.

That BMW # is impossible... bmw must have upped their monthly contribution to the publisher... I'm pretty sure the all-wheel drive version was slower than the manual. Weird...
