So I did and experiment with my Navi (sad now)

Ok, so I have an 2002 sc430 and 2001 gs430. A while ago I purchased a 2003 navi DVD for SC430. Then found the original laying under the carpet, and contemplated for a while if I should stick that into my GS. Well, yesterday, out of sheer boredom, I decided to put the SC DVD into my GS. It updated, then restarted the Navi, and now my destination buttons don't even light up for use. Map works, the new style legends work, but nothing in the destination buttons. I can't even change the region. This sux.
So I ordered the new 2005 update, and hope that fixes the problem.
Moral of the story, don't put SC DVDs into a GS.

I bought the update for my 01 GS. POI and roads massively updated, but routing is worse than ever. It used to be if you said "shortest distance" it would make it the shortest possible. . .now it seems like everything it routes is "maximize freeway" even though that is set to off.
Routing got a lot worse.

noooooooooo, don't tell me this. I am going to be really upset if the new navi sux.
On another note, is there a way to erase the entire navi har-drive, and start from scratch? I have time to play around with it until 05/01/06. Thats when my new DVD gets here. Thanks all.

I know someone that did something similar. He did buy a legit real nav cd, but he made a copy of it to use in the car and kept the original at home. I guess he didn't want it to get damaged by the heat or something? This is what he really did, not turn around and try to sell it. Anyways, long story short, the whole nav system pretty much took a dump. That is with a duplicated copy of the original disc, not even a disc from anohter car. I think he had to take it to the dealer for them to reflash the nav unit back to a previous firmware, and then reload a new one off the new disc.
Moral of the story here? Try to stick with what was labeled and intended for the car.

It will work off of a copy alright. . .but after I let it update the firmware in both my RX and GS using the original $280 DVD.
And I agree with the warnings: I don't know if it's the extra power or passes required to read the (darker, less reflective) DVD+R DL, or the fact that it reduces seek times, but rerouting underway with the copy eventually hangs, freezes, and then posts "Guidance Not Available." Really scary, but a small rest and restart of the car fixes it right up. You might get a new destination or reroute in, but typically, it the copy is only about 75% reliable past the initial ignition on routing request.
A DVD-R DL might work better, but these things are $3 a piece, so I want to make it count.
And, I am far and away too frightened to sell the original for all the reasons stated above. . .the RX (with its newer NAV) keeps the real copy at all times, as I wouldn't want it failing on my lady.
