GAS - Question
Fellas:
With gas prices so high and rising rapidly, I wanted to know if its OK to just use 87 gas or if I really need to keep shelling out for Shell V-Power93 octane.
By the way, I seem to be getting worse fuel efficiency over the past several months. Is there anything I need to look at. Air filter is clean, regular 3,000 mile oil changes are being done. Anything else you all recommend I look at.
I don;t drive crazy so thats not the issue.
Peace,
Ted

To be honest with you, even if you go with 87, your only saving like 3.50. You could really hurt the engine and then you will probably have to spend more on fixing it. So think about that next time you consider putting the 87 in there, to me, its not worth saving 3-4 bucks.

Ted, I would take the car out ONLY when necessary, and if you do happen to take it out, try to combine all of your trips (e.g. work/bank/supermarket all at one time). Public transportation may be another option, but having lived in Connecticut for 4 years, I did not see much of it even around the Hartford area.
As far as oxygen sensors, I believe these should only be replaced when they get faulty and throw out a check engine light. They are not specifically a preventive maintenance item, per se (although when replaced, they do improve the fuel efficiency).
And of course, you have the other following steps to improve your fuel efficiency: minimize A/C usage (check the A/C filter in the meantime), even out tire pressures, no jackrabbit starts, use a fuel cleaner additive 2 times a year. Good luck bro

I wouldn't risk it. Sure the knock sensor will keep it from detonating, but the cost benefit is not worth the risk. Do the math once and you'll see it's probably $3 a week. Whats that, a double Grande Mocha at Starbucks?
Check the plugs for wear. Might want to change the oil, or move to synthetic also. Helps a little. I think 21-23 is average for a GS300.

These questions always confuse me... premium has always been (most of the time) $.20 more per gallon than regular. Therefore you've always been paying the same premium (no pun intended) for gas throughout the years. What's the difference now that gas is more expensive???

compared with yearly depreciation on these cars, the diff. in gas price between reg and premium really makes no difference. you are losing something like $4k per year just for owning the car for that year. so why are you worried about $100 diff in gas cost? add insurance and your mods and whatnot, and the gas cost becomes really insignificant.
