Try it with it the AC on and then with it OFF.

The next time you drive in the city and can leave the windows open (read that is in not driving very fast on the highway, but more of slow city driving with lots of stops etc), turn up the heat to maximum and the fan setting to maximum and drive like that for a good 20 mins with the AC button on. Do that a few times in two days and voila, the smell will be gone for the whole year.
I have done this personally myself once a year in both cars (my wifes Maxima and my GS) and it works like magic. Does not cost you a cent and cures the problem completely.

lol, guys new A/C air filter and couple of sprays on it with your favorite cologne - its not a big investment, if the old filter has the stench in it will never go away, the old filter has to come out. Just try it this way, take out the old filter and spray in the the empty spot, leave the filter out.

I completely forgot to mention in all my posts that I did change my A/C filter when I initially had this problem, however the problem did not go away completely. However once I ran the A/C on full blast at the hottest setting, the smell completely dissappeared.
So, to sum it up, replace your A/C filter and run this procedure to get rid of mildew in the rest of the system.
