i was just looking up some specs on my 2000 gs400 and used this page edmunds and compared it to the 1999 GS400 from edmunds. but the 2000 gs seems to be .5 seconds slower then the 1999 gs.

i wanted to ask all the experts at CL to see what the difference is between the 2 GS's??

The only difference I can think of is that in 2000 there was a platinum edition offered which came optioned a certain way with slightly different wood treatment, different 16" wheels, and platinum badges on the front fenders. Also, a few of the colors changed in 2000 as well (alpine silver was replaced with millenium silver and diamond white pearl was replaced with crystal white). There might be a few other slight differences, but other than that, the cars should be pretty much the same. Can anyone think of anything else?

Brake Assist in the 2000 is the biggest thing that stands out for me.

Here is the description (from the latest GS but I don't think the idea behind it has changed).

The Brake Assist system is a computer-controlled feature that helps the driver realize the full potential of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). In some instances, drivers fail to push the brake pedal hard enough to engage ABS. Using the same brake actuator as the Traction Control (TRAC) system, Brake Assist senses a panic-stop scenario by judging how quickly and how forcefully the driver hits the brake pedal, automatically applying increased braking boost until the driver releases pedal pressure.

I personally have not driven in a car with Brake Assist but I know of a few who have made the comparison and it is noticeable, especially in conjunction with a BBK .

So.....to sum it up, if your not pushing hard enough. Lexus will push a little harder for you....or should I say stop.

99 was the last year of the shifting on the steering wheel if i remember correctly.

Sorry, incorrect (and welcome btw). Steering shift buttons were on 2000 GS4 and 2001+ 2nd gen GS300s (they dropped off the 2001+ GS430s)

New from 99 to 2000

Added Day Time Running Lights
Color Changed Silver from Alpine to Millenium Silver

I think there were also some standard Fixes with rattles (TSB)


the big changes were 2000 to 2001.
No more steering wheel shifting for the v8
a lot more wood in the 2001

2000 also had child seat anchors on the rear deck that 1998-99 didn't.

There weren't any engine changes.

Regarding the 0-60 difference, that is just the standard error when testing cars. A lot of factors influence the car's 0-60 times such as:

- Air Temperature + Humidity
- Amount of traction available
- Elevation

Maybe an 85-lb horse-racing jockey got the 5.7 0-60 and a 400-lb guy drove to get the 6.2 0-60...

Differences in the manufacturing tolerances can even cause different power outputs among the same engines on the same assembly line.

Speaking of brake assist. since last friday my left rear brake is grinding badly, after inspecting of the pads, its pretty much all gone, and i found that when i do braking, the brakes got firmer. So, i am guessing the brake assist shift the braking power to the front??? I AM ONLY GUESSING...

good info guys. i guess the 0-60 times are just not too reliable because too many other factors are involved. i thought my 2000 gs400 was alittle slower then the 99 gs400. glad its not slower

Should be the same times, the GS430 is definitely slower than the GS400 though

I believe the DRLs were added for 1999.
