Failed to DIY chrome grille.
Well, since I don't like the fitment of my RMM grille, I decided to take my old original one and DIY chrome it like it was described in several threads here. I went through several posts using Search option, made a list of all the things people used to chrome their grilles and kept this list in the car until the times when I get a chance to stop by Home Depot or some similar store.
Last weekend I ended up shopping at Target, searched through the shelves and the only thing I could find was liquid Goof Off, not the gel. I first tried it with q-tip, even though it's liquid, then I soaked a towel into it and tried to wipe the grille - both to no effect. Not even a chip of black paint came off. I tried then to bath the whole grille itself in that Goof Off stuff for 15 minutes (I actually want to chrome the whole grille, not just ribs), still no result.
So, can anyone tell me if I could just use an acetone, or would it be too strong and damage the chrome layer?

I just did mine last week, I used a paint stripper that is used for wood, worked great!
It was also nice and thick so it stayed on the parts I wanted to strip.
I used a 3M pad (an old one that I used to use to wash dishes), it made the job MUCH easier.

acetone will work but please wear gloves.
Chroming the front slats is very easy but doing the entire grill is the biggest PITA.
I've used the orange stuff first, failed.
Then started using acetone and its better. But you will need to do some heavy scrubbing. 2+ hours
Worst DIY I've ever done.

I used Citrusstrip Gel paint remover and it worked great. I only did the front slats. Applied with a q-tip, let sit for 30 mins, then removed with a razor blade to make some really clean edges. Whole process took about 2 hours. Now doing the whole grill is probably a huge PITA. Good Luck

try JASCO paint remover (gold can), little strong but it will take out about anything but chrome-just spread it out, leave it for like 15-20 min. then rinse it with water with towel or a soft scrubber try 10 slats at a time, i wouldn't leave it for more than 30 min coz it might melt the chrome i'm not sure but this pruduct is hella' strong. u could find it at any hardware stores. i lost the image here in my comp. somehow.

How exactly did you go about getting such clean edges? Does the blade not scratch the chrome at all?

yeah, so i tired the razor blade on one side.
SCRATCHED THE CRAP outa it.
paint stripper works alright, you gotta be patient though.
I guess i didn't do a good job making sure i only got the front so i'm gonna do the whole thing and then paint the sides, and those little flat parts maybe to match the color of the car...
