you want it mounted as high up as possible, so it has the best possible chance of picking up signals at the greatest distance (per V-1).
You DON'T want to mount it behind the tinted/darker strip at the top of the windshield though!!!

Hardwire Radar GS300
Did this a couple of years ago and its still going strong!
I ended up tackling the problem with another option, by taking a switched live & ground from the rear view mirror/compass power.
1/ Remove light cover in front of the moon roof-carefully. Insert a thin flat screwdriver about 1" from each end and work it down, light cover will pop out.
2/ Do the same for the garage door opener panel, again carefully insert flat screwdriver about 1" in either end and pry down gently.
3/ You will see 4 cross head screws, remove those, the panel is then free to drop down.
4/ Unclip the 3 white connectors (roof-lights-garage door opener), panel is free to be removed out the way.
5/ Find the orange rear view mirror/compass connector top left fixed to roof and disconnect it.
6/ The live switched wire is red and the ground is black.
7/ If its an Escort or Passport radar detector, they use a simple phone cord. Cut a length about 9" long, take the middle 2 wires (there are typically 4) my 2 middle colors were red and green-but this is not a standard. Feed cut end through the top of the mirror mount and pull all the way through, confirm that length is correct. Remember suction cups will not stick to the raised black grid directly behind the mirror. Cut the 2 outside phone wires (black & yellow in my case off)
8/ When holding the phone jack upside down the left middle wire (or second from the left) is the one you need to attache the live switched red wire to.
9/ The third middle wire (or third from left) is the black ground.
10/ Radio shack has telephone wire tap connectors 19-26 gauge wire (RS part # 64-3081)
11/ Place tap connector on to red switched wire on the disconnected side of the mirror/compass wire, feed in the second from the right wire into crush with red.
12/ Place tap connector on the black ground wire on the disconnected side of the mirror/compass wire, feed in third wire from right into tap and crush with black.
13/ Put a wire tie around phone cord and mirror/compass wire for a strain relief.
14/ Re-connect the orange mirror connector and test.
15/ Re-connect the white roof-lights-garage door openers
16/ Re-position the 4 cross head screws
17/ Clip garage door panel back into place and test
18/ Clip light cover panel back into place and test.
Drive safely. Feel free to email me macvalk@yahoo.com if any of this is not clear. Machog

Sorry to bring up a really old thread but I have a small problem. I wired my Beltronics detector to the mirror circuit as described in this thread, and I keep getting random low voltage warnings on the detector. If the car is not running, the detector just says low voltage, one started it seems to do fine, but sometimes if you hit the brake, or turn a switch anywhere it will go off with the voltage warning. Any suggestions? BTW I switched out this detector with another just to make sure there was nothing wrong with it and the same thing happens. Any other switched wires I could tap off of , that are easy to get to?

Hate to be a n00b and bump this thread, but it rolled right off the first page! Ive tried searching to no avail. I see one thread about wiring the radar detector to somewhere behind the gauges ,but thats way too involved for me.

dont quote me on this, but i believe you can use a regular phone cord if you dont wanna buy a kit... i think the wires you are looking to use out of a basic 4 wire line would be the red & green... im not 100% so you need to do some additional searching online for confirmation.
imo, just use something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=263602_263622
and run the black/red to the switched power at the mirror as described a few posts up..
good luck
