wow. i tried this. It was so simple for the front bars. But inside was hard to reach and really hard to scrub off. I made a mistake of letting it sit for too long and it actually made some of the chrome peal off from the inside. Its okay.Painted the inside black and left the front bars chrome. And it looks pretty clean.

haha i remember the 1st time i did the DIY chrome grille was about a year and a 1/2 ago i was doing it to my 2000 stock grille and i was standing in my driveway and i placed the grille on top of a garbage can... pouring nail polish remover on top and then wiping it off with cotton *****..

Lookin sweet, i really want to do it to my 98LS, is there a difference between the materials of the grills???? Heres a pic of myLS i tihnk it'll loookk reallly gooood.

'98-'00 Grille
Hey guys can someone who actually completed fully removing the chrome off the 1998-2000 grille for the gs tell me what they did that was different than what GATO did? From what I can tell I buy Paint stripper and spray it all over the grille. Then do I need to find something to scrub with? No one wrote the whole process out for the 98 grille so I am just not sure what is done differently. Someone please explain, thanks.

Here's a before and after pic. The front came off very easy but the sides and back was not such a friend. I did my best and I am pleased with the results. Might have to do it again later.

I had to use the stripper 3 times to complete, but...
once done, the grill came out great.
The first time I sprayed the paint stripper, I waited 5 minutes and used an old toothbrush to get most of the paint off. The second time, I put an old sock over my gloved hand and polished all of the "exposed" chrome. The third spraying I used Q-tips to clean in between the slats. Even after all of this, I can still see some areas where the paint hasn't been fully removed, but I was mindful of warnings about taking the chrome off, so I never left the stripper on for more than 10 minutes or so.
The next opportunity I have, I'm going to apply the last coat of paint stripper and target those few spots that are left. I'm probably the only one that can see them, so it may be overkill...but that's what all this stuff is about.
BTW, this was done on a Silver 01 430 w/100K miles. I'll post pics later this week.

Not to bring up way dead threads, but I foudn this useful, and you can find this stuff in the paint department at Wal Mart .... I foudn it in three different wal marts yesterday (dont ask why I was going wal mart ot wal mart, it was black friday)

I finally did this today. It comes off the front surfaces easily. In between is very difficult. I tired about three times to strip it away. We started with a dremel. This worked pretty well, but is very time consuming. I guess in some places the stripping agent wore the chrome down, so the dremel buffed right through it in two discreet locations. I finally threw in the towel on making it perfect. From afar it looks nice, you get up close and bend down and look in...it looks absolutely terrible. Good enough for temporary until I purchase a new grill.

If you look closely you can see in the after picture the dull area between slats on the bottom, and on the middle bar. It looks pretty bad if yuo get real close, perhaps Im just far to ****. Like I said...was something to do this afternoon, cost me 5 bucks, and temporary. From a distance, it looks great imo.
