Default HOLY ****! My rear right tire got owned while doing 70 on the highway

While coming back from six flag's yesterday,I was speeding half way home till my tire popped. I swerve to the left, then i drove over to the break down lan. It was some scary ****. I was doing 70 and i thought my car was gonna flip over. I don't kno what i hit or what happen, all i heard was some rumbling noise. When i got out, i heard from my friend say OH ****. I looked over and saw smoke coming outta the back. I thought my car was on fire lol. We all went out to check out what happened. The tire is like completely cracked and i see pieaces of tires over the road. After that incident, it ruined the surrondings of my car's body parts. I don't think i ran over any animal cuz there was no blood, and i don't think i ran over a rock cuz i was driving on the long distance lane and there was other cars driving too, if i hit it; they would have hitten it too, but i wasn't really sure cuz i was dead tired. Well guyz that was my story. I'll post up some pix later, its REALLY worth seeing.

Here are the pix guyz

And i wanna mention that my car has 108k miles.. and the steering wheel shakes like krazy when i hit over 60 mph. i think its the alignment or w/e or rotary. No idea.

Yeah, a low quality tire or improper balancing will cause that. The tire will heat up so badly that eventually it gives out.

Same thing happened to me last year while I was still on stocks....some scary stuff. I don't think I hit anything but I just felt my car swerve hard to the left.....and then after I straightened it out it pulled me two lanes over to the left again.

Glad to hear you are ok though......

If you ran over a nail or anything to put a hole in your tire to cause it too be low on air pressure it will heat up while driving and come apart. It is critical to check your tires air pressure regularly. I noticed our cars all run a fairly stiff short sidewall, it is hard to tell visually if the tires are low on air. Bad things happen when tires are low on air pressure, especially at high speeds where more heat builds up.

Welcome to Massachusetts ..lol. The roads are awful here especially in the city, it's making me think twice about getting rims.

i hope you were on stock wheels and there wasn't much damage.

hey...i thought that only happend to me????!! i put on my spare wheel (BRAND NEW TIRE) that came with the car because i was running outta threads on the other one. the 2nd day i had it on, i took a turn literally 10-15 mph, nothing heavy, then boom...the whole side wall was rippped, and tire spit chunks all over the ground. the smell was horrible and to reiterate, the tire was BRAND NEW. ...paid good money for my lexus, and it came with a garbage tire, go figure.

This is on your 1998 Lexus? How recently had you checked the air pressure in the spare?

Most people never check it.

I was driving my friend's '92 Accord while my GS was getting painted. Right after I borrowed it from him, I did my usual safety check - brake pads, oil, coolant, lug nut torque, tire pressure... including the spare. The spare (a "compact tire") had 15 lbs of air in it. The compact spares require closer to 60 psi.

TranceKid, how often do you check your tire pressure? You might have had a grossly underinflated tire, or maybe you just picked up a road hazard (nail, piece of metal). Any word on what caused the failure? The days of "random tie blowouts" are long gone.

When I see this type of failure, 99% of the time it can be traced to worn-out or underinflated tires or a road hazard.

sorry, i should have been more detailed. the spare was a full spare, with a brand new tire on it, the same one that came with the car originally..i put it on (star patter of course) and went to the gas station and checked the pressure, it was around 38 or 39, so i diddnt mess with it. i can take pics of the tire later, looks pretty knarly
