Angry $3200 in repair to my GS400

I visited the dealers today because my check engine light was on and when they ran it on there coputer this is what came out

p0430,p1128,p0121

which basicly means that my cataletic converters blew and my throttle body sensor is worn out so is my throtle sensors

to repair them this is what there asking for

CAT converter assembly $2000

Throttle Body $1247.26

man thats a rip off, I was wondering if I took out the catalytic converters and put a straight pipe would the car still pass emissions , or does someone make an aftermarket converter or throttle body ?

Biggie, if it is a part that is related to the car's emissions, the feds (EPA) require that it function for 100k miles. And your cats definitely affect your emissions. Would think throttle body sensor would, too. So, in theory at least, these parts are covered by your emissions-related warranty.

And to answer the first question, no. If you take the catalytic convertors out and you are emissions tested, you'll be very dirty. No way to stay in compliance without them.

How did you manage to crap out you cats?

Biggie, how many miles you have on your car? This is the first time I've read any major problems with a GS under 100k.

You can always get a high flow cat and custom piping, the high flow cat with decrease back pressure, improve performance and keep u legal. But I'll heard stories that some high flow cats dont perform to the states requirements. Its up to you.

Like I said Biggie, less back pressure creates more power, which in turn puts a big smile on your face You should look into the high flow cat setup!!

Biggie,

My suggestion is this...

For the cats, go to a high performance muffler shop. They will be able to weld high-flow cats and exhaust tubing that will fit your car and still pass emissions while giving you a little increas in HP. Cost would be no more than $800 or so. If you were in SoCal I would recommend some guy here that could do it for you for an excellent price.

Second, contact Steve @Carson Toyota or Todd @ tmengineering.net to purchase the throttle body parts and sensors. Next, find an independent mechanic who specializes in Lexus cars and they will charge you half the price you were quoted at the dealer for service work. My guess would be for both you could get out for around $1500.

You have no more warranty so what do you have to lose? You don't have to go to a Lexus dealer to have service work performed. I have heard many stories of reputable Lexus dealers who have service dept. with very shady practices. It's usually the good mechanics that get fed up with the dealer's shinanigans and decide to start their own business. There have been stories of mechanics taking bad parts from the scrap bin, bringing it to the customer, claiming the part is bad and charge them for replacement WITHOUT even touching it on the car. How can you tell? Unless you actually watch them do the work you can't tell. At least with independent mechanics they charge you less.

Just suggestions though.

Brent
