Default whats a salvaged GS400 worth?

here is the description straight from the ad

Great car, Fully loaded, xeon lights, nakamichi radio/cd changer,leather,4 brand new tires and brakes.Rides smooth, very fast car, very clean inside and out.Has a NJ salvage title issued b/c the car was a theft recovery. I have the insurance letter from Chub ins co to show if any one interested (which states the car was a theft recovery).I had an autobody shop look at the car and found no accidents/repairs to body. You will not believe the condition this car is in. Everyhthing works on this car. My wife and I drive the car on the weekend and also have another car but only want to keep one car for now.

its a 98 with 65000 on it. the seller is asking $15300.

$15,300 sounds average for a 98 GS400 with 65,000 miles

but probably not for a salvaged titled GS4. I would offer $11,500 at most, but that's just me. I tend to avoid cars that do not have clean titles.

Mileage aside he wants too much money for the car. I went through the salvaged/theft recovery route before and unless you find your twin down the road when you want to get rid of it you will never be able to get rid of it for decent money no matter what letter you have from who or where or the president of any Insurance company. And trust me you will want out of it someday everyone says oh i'm going to keep this one for ever but lets not fool ourselves we very rarely seldom do. Not to sound cheap but that car is worth half that, and the whole we only drive it on weekends and we only want one car sounds a bit strange but to each there own. Bottom line I would rather have a car with maybe higher mileage but with a clean title. Think theft recovery, and then think of an 18 year old kid with an Avis rent a car......

I have to agree, your asking for trouble with getting involved with a car like that. Everything may be fine, but the warning is there, I would heed it and not get involved.

With those miles and year, you can find something comparable with a clean title and that will give you a bit more piece or mind.

Been there. Done that. My first car had a salvaged title. Regreted every minute of it. Never again. Learn from other peoples mistakes and find yourself a clean GS.

That is way too much for a salvage regardless of the reason it was salvaged.Buy yourself a higher meliage clean one for less.

Vin,

What part of NY are you in? If it's NYC, try Planet Motors on Hillside in Queens, they usually have a nice selection of GS around and can be negotiated with if you have half decent skills. But even if you don't like them, within a 20 block radius there likely to be at least 10 GS's for sale at other dealers

Well if your in Queens you should have no problem finding one at all, There or a ton of dealers on Hillside, down Jamiaca ave, highline dealers on Northern Blvd... the places to get one are endless. Oh how i miss Queens Bridge...

The price he is asking for that salvage GS is way to high. Just for example I had a friend recently buy a 2003 Salvaged (theft recovery) 330Ci coupe with 62k on the odometer, black on black w/19"BBS CH wheels staggered a 2005 face lift, H&R Coilovers, Hamman Intake and cat back exhaust and a Alpine in dash tv for $12k. The seller was originally asking $15k but he talked him down. Now my friend can easily sell the parts and sell the car its self for 12k cause of the face life.

In any case I would offer him $8k cash for that GS. You can find very clean semi high mileage GS3 and sometimes 4's for around 15k that will still last you another 100-160k. Good luck

Also check if it was a theft recovery or was it really hit. Try to stay away from cars that have been hit. Most of the theft recovery cars have had the interiors wheels brakes etc etc stolen. But when insurance companies salvage those cars and auction them they replace everything with OEM spec parts. Or the owner buys it back, fixes it to stock condition and sells it to make the money. Just be careful with salvage cars, they can be very tricky and a pain in the rear later down the road.

Vin, it's on 161st and Hillside Ave, if you want to let me know when you're thinking about going, I'll meet you over there and give you an opinion on the deal (bring a mechanic too) But yeah there are quite a bit of GS's on Hillside.
