Default Daily Drive on 20s?

hey guys im sure this topic has been covered before, but ive been searching for hours and cannot find a solid thread

i have a 98 gs400 and am lowered on tein CS version 2. Currently i am riding on 19" but am going to move up to 20" soon.

that being said, I live in los angeles and drive 60-70 miles in traffic everyday to school. I mostly take highway roads. Do you think this is a bad idea?

Im mostly worried about reliability. can 20" take the day in and day out punishment of daily commute? Will my brakes be able to keep up with the extra weight of the rims (32 pounds each w/o tires) over time? How about the extra weight's effect on my transmission and drive train. I dont plan to slam the car, maybe 1.5 fingers. I am very good on regular maintanence to the car, I really want this car to last, it runs very strong right now.

do any of you have stories where you wish you did not have 20s? and how easy is it to bend 20" rims on the freeway? I am riding on 19" fats in front and regular tires in back right now and dont think its too bad. Am I going to notice a large degration of my ride quality from the 19fat front/reg back setup?

I'm not too worried about switching tires every 10-15k.

But I am worried about being stuck with a flat and 20s on the way say to Vegas or San Diego from los angeles.

If my car is my daily driver, do you suggest I stay away from 20s? I have my eyes on the Trafficstar STMs GXOTIC is selling but am having second doubts due to the daily driving issue.

Rominl I noticed you have those same wheels on your GS. I was wondering what your thoughts were?

Thanks guys

Thanks

I'll just say ive been riding on 20"s for 4 1/2 yrs and i havent had any problems u will wear ur brakes a little faster not much though, i have my car lowered about 2 finger lenghts in fron, and rear, ive craked a rim before riding over a pothole and i mean a big 1 with not much air in the tire. To sum it all up i wouldnt worry about anything just keep good air pressure in the tires, and avoid pot holes lol.

ditto. i live in upstate ny, same deal- roads are TRASH. i have axis milano 20x8.5 2.75 inch lip front and 20x9.5 3.75 inch lip rear with 245/35/30 & 275/30/20 nitto 555s and although i thought driving with the car lowered and 20s i was going to have issues, i dont... these handle surprisingly well over regular bumps and minor potholes no damage to date and the ride isnt rough at all (im on l tuned springs/shocks looking to up to cs v2 asap) the thing is you do have to drive smart, dont navigate your lexboat towards craters in the road, and if you cant stay focused enough to keep an eye on the road (especially at night) maybe 20s are not for you....i mean if youre driving on the stock gs 17s and you nail a BIG pothole the right way, youll wreck that rim and have a tireblow out with that 17 just the same..itll just cost less to repair when its over- all that said, it is also important to get a very well made wheel and decent tire set up...you buy those "dubs" off ebay that were on sale for $399 shipped and you're going to end up with a bent/cracked rim, period.

You should be fine with 20s, depending on the tire set up you currently have, it should not be that big of a difference if you switch to 20s. I have had my 20s for a little over a year now, set up is in the sig, and i dont have any problems with comfort or anything else for that matter. I got my Teins almost all the way down, and so far so good, cant complain, you should go for it!!

thanks guys for the help

the rims im set on purchasing are the trafficstars gxotic is selling

theyre on 245/35 front 8.5 and 285/30 10 in back

i think that that is pretty ideal for 20" setup, looking forward to it

its good to know u guys didnt have any serious problems

and drum, i havent had too much problem with allignment but hopefully itll come out right. in fact, ive always had real good experinces with teins and allignment, i think it is becasuue you are on airbags that allignment becomes a problem =(. i was considering bags too but its too extreme for me haha.

I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. I had the same thing in mind. I plan on getting 20's but wasn't sure if I should since I live in the Bay Area and the streets aren't the most forgiving. This thread has made me more confident to go through with purchasing 20's after everybody saying they've been riding 2+ years on 20's.

BTW: How much does 20's with say 245/35 in front and 275/30 tires in the rear throw the Odomoter and Speedo off by???

I remember reading if it reads 80, you are going 86. Sometimes I feel Im actually going faster and sometimes I feel Im only doing 80 like the speedo says.

Mine is actually dead on with 20s. I was assuming that my speedo would read lower, but then I passed one of those speed radars that you see on the hwy, and my speedo was showing the exact same number as the radar. This happened a few times actually, I get radared a few times throughout the week in 3 or 4 different spots while going to work/school, and my speedo always matches the radar.

Ypu'll be fine with 20's and daily driving. Shoot people down here drive with 24's & 26's daily. I just put on 20" Works and ride just like factory. Maybe the Michelin PS has a little to do with that too. Good luck. Now buy those 20's that mark's selling.
