99+ have DRL's, the 98's DON'T have DRL's. On the old board a few 99 owners mentioned they were lucky to get their car without DRL's as they were the first batch of 99's shipped to the states. So to answer your question, DRL's are not an option.

I have a 98GS400 without DRLs. I thought they were added in 99.
I think I recall a post that said the DRLs on the 99s and newer could be turned off by the dealer.
It also said the dealer was very reluctant to do it, but when pushed they complied (I believe this was in a state that doesn't require them -- California requires DRLs on new cars doesn't it?).
I hope they can be turned off on my new GS 'cause I hate em.

Yes CA requires DRLs on all 2000or up models I believe. If you want to disable the DRLs then I recall that V300 posted a way to disconnect them way back in the old forum. You can PM him and ask I think.
I really don't mind the DRLs, but I would like to have them light up as blue, not yellow. I've changed the tiny DRL wedge bulbs, but I think the wattage isn't strong enough to have them light up as blue.

i did the same thing. i replaced the DRL bulbs with some aftermarket super white bulbs but they still look yellow. i wish i can turn them off but my dealer said that they can't do that.

Get to know your service techs!
This is the very reason that over the years I've learned to get to know (and offer a "hook up") the mechanics, preferably the "leadmechanic" in the group. At least here in Big D. each service advisor has a particular service team. I have had several installs and discounts right from my dealership by just getting to know these INVALUABLE guys! MY guy offered to retro-fit the daytime running lights on my car! But I was like no thanks!

the DRLs are the very tiny bulbs in the lower inner side of the inner lights.
When the light switch is turned to the lowest click, the lights are all off except the little parking light, acting as the DRL. When you turn 1 click, the parking stays on and the high beam lights up with very low wattage. So both no click and 1 click looks yellow. But when I have my headlights on and turn on the HB the HB is actually white.
What bulb should I use ? Polarg M6? I don't remember if that's what I'm using now. It does look blue on your DRL?

Actually, I believe the DRLs started in North America when Canada required them lots of years ago.
THEN the idiots at GM picked up on it for all of their cars as a means of creating marketing differentiation when GM was unable to produce any REAL product differentiation.
Have I mentioned I HATE them?

actually DRL is high beam at low wattage.
i have tried many times when on lowest click the high beam bulb is on... maybe this is just canada or something but im 100% that the corner parking light only comes on when the HID is on

DRL Defeat
I know a bunh of the 1s300.net guys have found a way to defeat the DRLs, but I don't know anyone who has done it on a GS yet...on the IS its as simple as unplugging one module that sits near the pass. side strut tower.

Sasha,
your right the DRL are the high beams at low wattage, they come on when you release the handbrake.
the small inner bulb is the parking light and it only comes on when you switch on the lights.
