Well I just took the plunge and bought a new ECU. It was a few hundred bucks so thought it was worth a try.

I heard there's a speed sensor associated with the navigation system. Is it a separate sensor than the vss that is attached to the tranny?

I seriously doubt there is a second speed sensor. It should feed from the VSS on the tranny.

Did you snap any pictures of the damaged harness or ECU?

Here's a pic I took a minute ago. I'm too lazy to unbolt the ECU, but it looks the same on the ECU end.

I'm not sure if the connector on the plug is friend also. Is there any way I can take the wire out of the plug, and "refresh" it with new parts? I see no way of getting the wire out of the damn plug.

Wow... that looks like it was exposed to water or some other liquid.

You can pull the wires out of the plug but you have to use a very small rod to push a plastic tab that holds each pin into place in the connector. A very small screwdriver (flat head) will do the job.

Come to think of it, I did see rustish water. But all this happened like 2 years ago though, lol. I just never went around to asking about it, lol.

The rest of the navi brain is working. So I'm not sure if the speed sensor is just not going through or what's up. Like mentioned I took the dip and bought another ECU, so hope it fixes it :/

Well I bought another ECU. It didn't came with the ECU so ok, I swapped mine over. It boots up fine, but the same problem is still there.

I'll try to pull the whole harness out I guess. I saw a thread on here to convert non-navi to navigation. So I guess I'll try to follow that and work backwards.

Since it looks like some water got in there, the wire may have heated up and melted the jacket off. Could be shorted somewhere... maybe that's the smoke your father saw.

I ran a *longass* wire from the cluster to the pin 13 of the plug. It's the speed signal from the cluster harness. Thing still ain't working. I don't know how to completely remove the harness and look at each individual wire so :/
