hello all...recently i am having a problem to start my 98 gs400. it has about 110k miles on it. when i tried to start it up every monring I get nothing, no cranking either. i had to try turn key few times or i have to turn key very quick then i may get lucky. i went to "pepboys" to let mechanic to check out starter and battery on the machine. they both are "good" as test result.... Anybody else having this problem? It just started recently. thanks in advance.

uptown, do a search on this topic, it was just recently discussed about these very same issues. You might try adding "battery" and "starter" to the search. That said, I would lean towards connections or solenoid being the problem.

Even though Pepboys said the starter is fine I would look into more.
Sounds to me like it could be the starter contancts or the starter itself. It's not uncommon for starters to begin intermentialy working like the way you described. Usually problems are first noticed in the colder weather. Could be a bad solenoid in the starter, loose wire, and or bad connections. Could also be the starter itself giving up which is highly unlikely the starters we have in our GS400 should outlive the life of the car.
I had the exact same problem on my '95 4runner and when I got under the truck and looked the starter I found out it was just a loose/bad connection.
Good Luck.

if what was said above about poor contacts dosen't pan out... this is a long shot but while you are holding your key in the ignition "start" position, try giggling the key and see if anything happens.
in my case, it turned out that my key was not fully engaged inside the ignition because the previous owner must have had a heavy keychain and has worn out some of the tumblers inside.
also, do you have another master key? there is also another small chance that the transponder in your current key could be bad?
