About to Repaint My GS400, Gunmetal?
I have a damaged rear quarterpanel and rear bumper, it would cost about 700 to fix at my friend's shop.
He offered to Repaint the whole car WITH color change for ~ 2500 dollars, WITH repairs included, with painting my l-tuned grill and my greddy lip/ltuned sides. He is also letting me bring in a aftermarket bumper, will put it on and paint it for me. Im also planning on removing my factory wing during this process.
I feel 2500 is semi low, but he is a friend's family shop and gaurentees the work for 7 years "under the sun". He is letting me pick any metallic paint out of the 2006 ppg import color paint book.
He is going to use pPG paint: sand everything down, 3? layer base coat, 3 layers of color, 3 layers of clearcoat.
Im thinking of going with a gunmetal color to replace my black. Probably not the IS300 color as that would be kinda lame, but somthing similar.
i was also thinking about buying this rip-off explosion bumper to replace my rear bumper.

it claims to be made of superior quality....
What do you guys think? Is pPG paint good? is the base, 3 color, 3 clear alright? and is my ebay bumper acceptable? (im local so could go pick it up and forgo the 150$ shipping, itd be like 310)

i was considering Toyota 1A1 Anthracite, but decided it was too brown. This is the 1993 Supra TT special edition color

From 10 feet away black is black to me, no matter what they call it. The price is awesome for a full 3 stage job. Since he is a friend I'm sure you have seen their work before so you should have a good idea of what you will be getting for your money. With what you have told us, I don't see any reason not to have them paint it.

PPG is really just a brand of paint. They have different grades of paint to select from. $2500 is a fair price to overhaul the car, but you need to find out what grade of PPG they are actually using. Paint can vary quiet a bit from selected grades, paint cost can vary as much as a few hundred to even thousands. FYI, the paint for my GS that I am currently using is a tri-stage paint and I have approximately $1700 in paid alone and that's at wholesale.

Color is awesome. Price is awesome. Bumper is awful
I would find a different bumper.

The only problems I have with Metallic blacks are:
1) It's too close to black; with a change from your stock black, most people won't notice that you've done anything special to the car (unless they are a Club Lexus member)
2) Due to the metallic flakes, they tend to look dusty in the late afternoon and early morning. Our Office Manager has a new metallic black Passat and it always looks dusty to me, even right after it's washed. The car can be spotless, but it'll still look like it has a layer of dust on it when it's sitting in the sun.
If you want to change it up a bit, I'd look at Mercedes Techtite Grey (too boring for me) or
Honda Nighthawk Black. The Nighthawk Black appears black until you get it at the right angle in the sunlight... then it turns Midnight Blue. Honda offers the color on versions of the current Odyssey vans.
Like DrvnConcept, I spent about $1700 alone on the PPG paint materials "at the bro deal." Of course, we did three different colors... but we purchased only a quart of the roof paint (Honda NightHawk Black). We shot six coats of clear, but we probably sanded-off & buffed-off about three coats of it.
With the GS, half of the job is disassembly and prep. Just removing the door handles, headlights, taillights, side glass, etc. took us the better part of the day. And plan to purchase all new clips for the chrome side window trim- the clips break when you remove these. The clips alone to do all four doors set me back over $100. Also, you'll probably want to buy new chrome mouldings for the bumpers.
One other note: I never really cared for the Explosion full rear bumper/GReddy add-on front spoiler combination. I'd look into getting both the front & rear bumpers. The Explosion rear bumper looks a little bulky with just the add-on piece up front, but with the full kit, the cars look fantastic.
Can't wait to see the finished product!
