Were xenons standard on 2nd generation GS430s?

yes, hid is standard on gs430 since 01

Follw up question:

Were they projector beams or something else? If not, does it make a big difference compared to a car with projector beams (e.g. TSX?)

The Lexus 2GS HID headlights are reflector-based. The light output is fine but nowhere as tight and clean as projector-based systems. Also, you won't get some of the color flicker as the projector ones becuase ... well... there are no projectors.

If you want projectors, a retrofit is the only option.
