My personal bias makes me pick the 01+ 430.

You live in FL right? this is the land of the swap cuz we have no emission tests. I say either keep your gs and drop gte or buy a 2nd gen gs3 and drop a gte if thats your thing? unless you want to keep the car as a really nice powered sedan without dropping a nice chunk of change for big power than gs4 or gs430 would be perfect.

For a minute there I thought you said "land of the swamp"

I agree with bluelex.

If no swamp, then get a nice 400/430 and you'll be set.

I came from a 1g GS300 to a 2g GS400. I had the same dilema. I was going to keep my old gs3 and do a gte swap a few years ago . I already had the aristo front clip just waiting to be swapped in. But I came across a good deal on my gs400 so ended up selling my gs300. I don't regret my decision but I do miss my gs3 and sometimes wish that I kept it to do a gte swap. The GS400 is powerful but I had an itch for a boosted car, so I ended buying a 240sx and doing a sr20det swap. Go with a GS400 or 430 if you dont plan on doing a swap.

I think it depends on how much you want to spend and if the car you buy is still under warranty. I'm guessing the mods you are considering would void them. My 02 430 does 0-60 in under 6 seconds and I think some of the bugs of the 1st gen were corrected by then. How fast do you want to go?

MAN, you guys should feel special, Cali emissions are a serious serious PITA

Back to OP, if your strapped for cash, I would sell the 1st Gen and get a 98-00 GS4.

Test drive both of them. I was originally thinking I would be fine with a GS300, till I drove a GS400. Then I was hooked.

I have a 1st gen that im still in love with every time I drive it. My wife and I shared the car for a while. Then we decided to get her a 2nd gen gs3. It was a 99' striped out no sunroof no frills interior. We rolled that for a year before getting the V8 itch. We started looking for a gs4 and fell in love with the ML and NAV setup. Then we drove a GS430 and had to have one. We have a 02' gs430 now and I love driving it, lots of bottom end torque, semi quiet what more could I want ? boost thats what. Im glad I kept my 1st gen. Im knee deep in my gte motor build and cant wait. If your into mods, gs4xx if you can deal with replacing parts and troubleshooting the occasional problem then gs3all the way.
