One of my best friends bought my 99 GS400 and called me today saying that the stereo just started making a loud popping noise every once in a while - maybe once every few minutes on top of the sound of the music... he didn't go into too much detail but that sure sounds like the amp to me. I know the Nakamichi amps are known for having some issues and, to me anyway (some other people said I was crazy), I was getting a significantly higher volume from the right channel speakers than I was out of the left channel speakers (yes the balance was set in the exact center)... especially at lower volumes, the difference was more noticable.
He also claims it's just as loud no matter what the volume is set on, I think just so long as the head unit is powered on.

UPDATE he listened to it himself (the previous description was from his wife)... I changed the description in the thread as well as noted it's more of a intermitant POP instead of a constant 'crackle'.
I tried to update the thread title but it won't update on the main page.

my 99 GS400 with Nak suffers from what i suspect to be the same problem. if im playing and music with a decent bass line loud for more than say an hour and a half, the music will start to cut out intermittently. on mine, im willing to bet its the factory amp getting too hot and then clipping. lift up the carpet in the trunk. on the right side is where the amp is. that little sucker gets pretty hot. if it stays cool, im certain the music will be fine. now....how to keep it cool??
