Default Stock tips 98-00 v. 01+ (with pic)

In case anyone was interested, the stock 01+ tips are noticeably larger than the 98-00 tips. Now if I could only get the old tips off.

Not only is it possible, but it's supposed to be pretty easy (that is, of course, unless you're me). I bought the new tips for $51 shipped. I'm not sure how much the dealer charges for them.

Wow that's a pretty big difference. I didn't even know my stock tips were that much bigger. Well I have an aftermarket exhaust now so it doesn't make a difference.

good comparo e. I didn't know the difference was that great either.

if you put those on you might as well do the 01+ grill and tails too.

btw e-if you're just scrapping the old ones, how about snipping them off with wire cutters......?

Or how about a bolt cutter?

Hey Chuck. I was surprised at how different they were as well. I think the 01+ is about 1/2 inch wider and 3/4 inch taller. It doesn't sound like much, but the picture doesn't lie.

As for the 01+ grill and tails, that's next on my list of mods. You know me, mod mod mod. I'm out of control.

I thought about just cutting the old ones off, but I wouldn't even know what or where to cut, and, knowing me, I'd probably end up destroying the whole pipe. Also, I was thinking that I would just donate the old ones to someone on CL who could use them, so I'd rather not ruin them. What were you thinking? Just cutting the inner sleeve or cutting the entire outside of the tip?

I'd snip from the end closer to muffler, cutting towards the tip. you can probably peel back the metal once you start cutting.

KANEDL25-a bolt cutter would cut easier but I doubt you could squeeze the tip in under the metal to cut.

another idea-did you try wd40-ing it up, also maybe even heat it up with a hair dryer and take a screw driver and a hammer and give it a shot.

Default Success!!!!!!!

I finally got them off. It really wasn't that hard at all. I took a metal chisel (any skinny long tool will do) and stuck it between the exhaust pipe and the tip, in very small steps, basically pried off the tip. You just keep inserting the tool around the pipe at various locations and when you pry the tool against the pipe, the tip will move one way, and then you move the tool to the other side of the pipe and pry again, and the tip will move the other way. Do the top and the bottom and so forth and so on. You get the idea. Eventually, the tip just loosens up and you can pull it right off. Each side took about 10 minutes or so.

Here's the tool I used:

And here's a few pictures with the 98-00 tip off the muffler to compare it to the 01+:

Here's a side view for comparison. It looks like the 01+ pipe will stick out a bit further as well:
