SoCalSC4 is back: exterior makeover photos!
As some of you know, I've spent the last year re-doing the exterior of my 2000 GS 400... it all started with an idiot in a Tahoe who ran a stop sign and wiped-out my right fender & headlight.
Of course, I would only trust my friend Joe at Backyard Creations with the repairs, and one thing led to another... a full repaint Bob & Joe style. Due to other scheduling conflicts and waiting for parts from Japan, it took almost ten months to complete the paint & body work - with several changes along the way. The car is still my 'daily driver,' so I opted not to go overboard with shaving door handles, gas door cover, etc.
Here's a brief list of what was done:
Body work:
* Front fenders stretched 6mm & vented (all metal)
* Hood vented, windshield washer squirters shaved
* Front bumper re-worked with carbon fiber inlay
* Side skirts re-worked with carbon fiber inlay
* Rear bumper re-worked to accommodate quad MagnaFlow exhaust + carbon inlay
* Rear fenders stretched 4mm and smoothed
* Supra LED brake light flush-mounted in decklid
* OE rear spoiler shaved
New parts:
* New HID headlight housings (newer green-tinted versions)
* New Hella Optilux driving lights
* New windshield
* New Junction Produce 3-piece rear spoiler
* New chrome trunk bar
* New LED tail lights
* New Magnaflow polished stainless mufflers & tips
* New Zone wheels
* New Yokohama Advan Sport tires
* StarShield paint protection, hood, mirrors, custom front bumper fitment
The particulars:
* Paint: PPG three-tone
Lower Body: Spectra Blue with blue pearl
Upper Body: Dark Spectra Blue with blue pearl
Roof and stripe: Nighthawk Black with blue pearl
* Wheels
Zone 8, "Brilliant Brushed" centers with ceramic clearcoat
chrome outers, blue powdercoated inners
20x9.5 front with 2.5" lip
20x11.5 rear with 4.0" lip
* Tires
Yokohama Advan Sport
255/30-20 front
305/25-20 rear (one of ten sets on the USA currently)
* Body
Explosion (Japan) body kit. Modified...
L-Sportline roof spoiler
Junction Produce rear wing
The car is pretty stunning in person; my only regret is that now I'm afraid to take it anyplace! I get asked about the car ALL THE TIME now and get a random thumbs-up on the road almost every time I drive it. Of course, a project like this doesn't happen without the help of special people:
- Joe @ Backyard Creations. This guy is an artist and master of all things paint & body. I can't say enough about him - we had a common vision for the car and it came out beyond my expectations! Joe, you are THE MAN!
- Johnny (TLW). My Spectra Blue brother got me hooked-up with parts I needed to complete the job!
- Craig Lieberman @ MagnaFlow. Always there to help me with projects, and fellow GS owner now!
- Steve Ganz @ Carson Toyota. Set me up with the tail lights, chrome trunk bar, chrome bumper trim, etc.
- Mark Richter, Yokohama Tires. Thanks for the 305/25-20s!
- Chris & Jose @ Longo Lexus. Helped me with the body components, headlights, etc.
- Earl Mangune @ StarShield. Former TRD'er Earl set me up with StarShield's terrific paint protection system for my baby!
Okay, on with the fun stuff... hope you like!

Most creative thing I've seen on a 2nd gen GS in a LONG time. Huge props Bob, your car looks absolutely amazing.

Wow... great responses so far! Thank you!
The "second-tone" above the body line is pretty subtle - in direct sun you can barely tell the difference, but at certain angles or lighting conditions it becomes fairly obvious. The car is tall enough that it's hard to see the black roof - that's why we painted the roof spoiler the darker Spectra Blue, for contrast. I like that the car is still very subtle... very classy, very clean. Rolling Art!
Here are a few more:
Here you can see a bit of the blue inner rims. Again, a very subtle detail.
The Junction Produce guys seemed VERY intrigued with the fenders and hood...

bob , what can i say but
it is now the best on this site .. i love the hood shot and fenders , i keep looking at the wheels , you are really tempting me with those zone wheels
any chance you would be willing to share how the hood was done even if you could pm me details
also hows the ride on the advan sports , i really considering them for my next set of tires , the so3 are great but time for something new
do you think with my ssr gt3 19x10 rim +41 i could fit a 295/30/19 tire and not really stick out past the rear fender well area

Bad to the bone!
Now that's gangsta! What a beautiful GS! Very innovative with the carbon pieces added. I love those wheels against that paint job! The BBK calipers really pop off that paint color! Great job to a well put together GS! I see Christmas came early for some of us! Great job!
