I'm trying to drop the differential case out of my GS400 so that I can put a limited slip diff in it, but I can't for the life of me get the inboard axle joint to come loose. I've got every differential mounting bolt removed and all the axle joint bolts out, but the axle just won't come off the differential. I've tried lowering the diff, rocking it from side to side, banging on the axle joint, and swearing at it, but nothing is working. I figured that I didn't need to remove any of the axle's outboard hardware to get it off the differential, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's what I need to do.
Who's taken out a differential case or removed a rear axle? Can you offer any advice?
Thanks,
Brian

Do you have problem detaching axle's from diff. or drive shaft from diff. Can you please take a photo with your cell phone at least and show me where the problem is, than i might be able to help you

I can't get the axle to detach from the diff. Here's a picture of the joint. I've got the shop manual all it says is:
Remove (6) hex bolts
Disconnect the axles
Remove differential
There's no special instructions, so I'm thinking that the joint is "frozen". I'm not sure what to try to get it apart.

Yes it is "frozen"
Go and get rubber mullet and hit gently area i have marked on the picture, if this is not enough, you can use piece of wood stick like 1''x1''x10'' long (more or less) whatever fits and will give you sufficent work space, than hit it, starting gently the piece of wood with regular hammer. Of course the other end of wood must be located at the point i've marked for you on pic.
One or the other method should help

Yeah, that was my thought,,,, whack it really good with a mallet. I'll give that a try tomorrow. This thing has kicked my *** enough for one day.
I've studied the parts break-down for the inboard axle joint and it looks like the piece just below where you've marked should come off too.

I'm changing out the differential case (the guts) and reusing the carrier (housing). I'll post more about the project after I'm finished. I've gotta go get this thing out of my car.

The differential is OFF THE CAR!!! Yahoo! Yes, this joint was frozen, but I think the penetrating oil I fed it last night, plus using an air chisel this morning helped work it free.
Thanks for the help Lexsoos.
