Crackling noise

Sorry for the newbie question, but:

I've always wondered what's that crackling noise that comes from your car when you turn it off? It happens on the bimmer and the lex, but not the acura (maybe cause its newer?)

the only noise i know of is the exhaust cooling down

Actually I think it's the cats cooling down. Some of my friends run don't have them and their cars don't make the clicking/tapping sounds when the engine is shut off.

All of the cars we have in our family does that too. . . I have to agree with the exhaust cooling down
