i got a 98 GS400, no mechanical problems...
however, the car would be approaching 10 years old... so you'll neet maintenance done soon... its not always about mileage, fluids, pipes, etc. age over time... so i'll be getting tranny, power, differential oils changed this saturday actually, so keep a heads up with that.

No your fine. Just make sure you take it somewhere you trust and have them do a complete check up on the car. My buddy (hes on CL) just bought a 98 GS400 with 62k on the odometer 2 owner car (the dad owned the car fist and sold it to his son) no accidents, nothing SUPER SUPER CLEAN CAR! He bought the car for $14k. Its black on black, jsut make sure when you have it inspected the check EVERYTHING. Have them check the frame and paint on the car to see if its ever been in accidents, CARFAX doesn't always show everything. There are no recalls (to my knowledge) on the 98 400s or major problems.
GL but at that price I believe you can find something alot newer with less miles bro. Maybe a 2001+GS430 or simular.

I was under the same impression as well before purchasing the car. I thought since it is the first year of the 2nd Gen. GS, there are bound to be recalls and issues, but I love my car. People cannot believe the car is a 98'. Everyone swears the car is at least a 2000+ Lexus. I couldn't believe it myself either. I didn't even know HIDs were invented yet. Or even touch screen Navi for that matter. Way ahead of its time compared to the 98' BMWs and Benzes. Mine just hit 90K and I did the 90K service 2,000 miles ago. The car feels like new. The only thing that bugs me is the squeeky sunroof when going over bumps and dips, but I believe it is a common problem.
