I replaced mine with white CCFL tubes just like in my trunk. Now the whole footwell area is nicely lit. No more little dinky bulb

I used the 74 style LED bulbs and they are very dim under the dash. I like Jefftsai's idea to brighten it up a little.....

the type of CCFL inverters that are in a little blue plastic box are usually very unreliable
i have read many cases of them catching on fire in computer cases even with a decent power supply

so be aware

I've never hard any problems with mine catching on fire, knock on wood. Most of the inverters have a cut out built in(internal fuse, non-replaceable) if something goes wrong. It usually results in a dead and no longer working inverter. If it gets to the point where there's a fire, then that unit probably didn't have any safety cutout built in.
