Default Labor time/$$$ for 90k

I'm about to do my 90k. I'm getting all the parts from Sewell Lexus, and I'll be buying all the fluids from Toyota. Lexus will be doing the job, and because I'm bringing in a trunk-full of parts/fluids, I'll be paying them only for the labor. In addition to changing the timing belt and water pump, they will also be changing the spark plugs, all the fluids/filters, and everything else that comes with the 90k.

Here's the question. I had the dealership provide me with a labor quote and I'm trying to figure out if it's a fair deal. Before I say what the quote was, I'd like to get an idea as to what would be a fair amount of time to charge for the job. So, does anyone have any idea as to how long it would take a mechanic to do all those things?

for big, complicated jobs like timing belt on a 1UZ-FE, the dealer is the safest way to go unless you have a very skilled lexus shop you can trust, which most of us don't.

I did the timing belt on my dads 1998 LS400 last year and it was pretty easy. I had a Lexus service manual but I didn't really need it, just came in handy for torque specs. I am going to have to do mine this year. I think it took me about 4 hours doing it the 1st time.

Lexus quoted me $1K (parts + labor). And that doesn't include water pump.

You're pretty close. Lexus quoted me 7.5 hours to do everything. The standard rate is $120/hour, but they offered me a discounted rate of $95/hour. The total amount came out to right around $710. They told me it could be a tad less, so I'm thinking I'll end up right at $650 or $700. I'm getting all the parts from Sewell for around $450 (serp belt, timing belt, spark plugs, water pump, idler sub assemblies, gaskets, etc.) and all the fluids from Toyota for around $50, so the total price for the 90k should be around $1,200 when all is said and done.

Here's the thing I'm not sure about, though. I asked the parts department at my dealership for a price quote for parts alone, and the total came to around $1,000. So, if you take the $900 for the parts and add the $700 for the labor, it comes to around $1,600. What I don't know is whether that's about right for a 90k service?

What I should have done is asked my service advisor for a quote for the 90k (parts and labor), and then subtracted the exorbitant price they're asking for the parts alone to come to the price for the labor. The thing is, though, that they're letting me bring in my own parts, which a lot of places won't do, and I don't want to be a jerk about it.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Does that include the idler subassemblies? What about all the fluids that goes along the basic 30k service?

Yeah, I gotta agree with Chuck on this one. I'll gladly pay a little more to have peace of mind that the job is done right, and, more importantly, if it's not done right, that the dealership will stand behind their work.

Just curious, did that include all the fluid changes included in the standard 30k? What about spark plugs?

Okay, so if my service writer is telling me $700 for the labor, and that it might be a little less, he's not that far off. When I go in there, I'll ask him to commit to a number and stick to it. I'm expecting it'll be between $600- $650.

Personally, I think $1,200 for all that stuff is not too bad.
