Smile Help!Is it Necessary to Replace Timing belt??

Hi everyone, I have a 2002 gs430 with a little over 95,000 miles on it and the lexus dealership told me I need to replace the timing belt. I previously owned a 1998 gs400 with 160,000 miles on it, and never replaced the timing belt. Lexus dealership says its going to be a bit over $800 and i'm not sure if it is absolutely needed?

it is recommended to replace your timing belt at a certain amount of miles to avoid timing belt failure which may lead to more costly repairs. Timing belt failure can cause costly damages to your engine. Just a preventative measure. Hope this helps.

the v8's are interference motors, so if the timing belt snaps, there will be pistons smashing into valves. your timing belt could last all the way up to 200,000 miles.

but it could also snap tomorrow, its your gamble

not the gamble I would take. I had a timing belt snap on me once, I ended up rebuilding the motor and then trading in the car because it was done poorly.

Dont skimp now, you'll pay more later...

$800 bux vs. a new engine at gawd knows how much is a no-brainer. I couldn't live with the uncertainty of having a car with that many miles and an aging timing belt.

i think the v6's are interference motors as well...i bought a timing belt book for about 60 bucks..i cant see myself paying 800 for a timing belt and water pump change.

i believe you are correct... the current v6 motors (i don't know what the engine code is... damn) in the 3rd gen GS's are interference.

i'm not 100% sure but i think the 2nd gen GS 2jz inline-6 is a non-interference design?

The current V6 motors in the GS uses a timing CHAIN, so there will never be a need to replace it. As long as the car is driven under normal conditions.

there are many rumor about timing chains. i was always told that they still need to be replace but not as frequent as belts. chains still stretch and need to be replaced. i could be wrong though. thats just what ive been taught

I think the service interval on a timing chain is like 160k or something like that VS a timing belt at 80k-90k. At least thats what the guy at the dealer told me when I asked about the IS350.

of course now's the safest time, but if you want to gamble that's your choice,I'd do it no later than 110k or so.

you made it 160k on your 98, so who knows. the car's an 02 so it's not like the belt is that old. my bro has my old 95 ES up to about 110k or so on the original belt.
