Default buying a GS400/430 soon. Couple questions

Looking for a 98-2001,

What years have the least amount of problems? I've heard alot about 98's having some issues.

Also what to look for as far as wear and tear (besides obvious things)

basically, i just want to know what year would be the best to buy.

Thanks

On a Side note how are the tanabe Coil overs, as far a ride quality goes. Im really looking for somthing to maintain a close to stock ride. well as close as possible. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on how much you want to spend really. Gs430's are still fairly expensive compared to Gs400's which retain their value equally as well but are older. I would shoot for a low mileage Gs400 over a High mileage Gs430 because the Gs400 does not have any major issues nor does the Gs430 but at least you will have a low mileage vehicle. The body is the same, and the power of the vehicle is pretty much the same although the Gs400's 0-60 is a slight margin quicker. I have a 98 and have had no problems with it at all and i have had it for 30K miles and just hit 100K. I also drive the crap of of my car (i basically floor it constantly when i can.) Most cars could not take the abuse. As far as the coil overs go i have no idea, i just have L-tuned springs which i very satified with its a little lower and the stock ride is still there. If i were you i would shop for a low mile Gs400 (98-00). Good Luck!

98-00 are more problematic than 01+. I say this because the 98-00 are older so lots of things have already worn out.

But it doesn't really matter because you're going to have to replace those old junker parts anyways. brand new parts on a 98 is going to be better than a low mileage 02 or something like that. The money you save (probably at least 4 grand) on an older GS, you can put towards maintenance that will make your car run like new.

Like??? Obviously they are going to have more things that may stop working because they are older compared to newer models, but I am not aware of any issues?? Please explain??

air conditioning condensor leaking, power steering res. leaking amoung other things.

I'm not trying to single out normal matience i used to be a mechanic, i am looking for things that are problematic to certain years, and what to avoid.

I know there was an updated steering rack after '98. the early ones didn't have the pretensioner adjustment bolt.

the main differences to me are:

98-00 GS400 have e-shift.

01+ GS430 have no e-shift, but bigger motor and a little more torque and some cosmetic updates.

And don't forget there were some colors that were discontinued starting in 01.
