Default 1999 gs400 stock navi that plays dvd?

I'm going to buy a black on black 99 gs400 w/ navigation. I was wondering if it can play regular dvds, and If not could I replace it with an aftermarket one? Can someone help me?

It does not play DVDs (is hard drive based). I believe you can get some aftermarket devices to play video on your nav, but the 98 - 00 screen resolution is not great.

You can replace it with aftermarket, but you will have to source a non-navigation AC control unit as the navi cars control their AC / heat, etc through the nav screen.

you can try this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Lexus-GS-300-400...QQcmdZViewItem

it says its for 98's and 99's although I agree that the screen on our cars have pretty bad res.

The GS's without navi have separate controls for the climate control, they're not integrated.

well yeah, like Dave says, you would have to source(buy) a climate control panel/module form a non navi. Then get a dash kit that's double din and I would go with eclipse avn-5495 or higher so you can have nav/DVD/MP3 capability but installing all that would be daunting I would imagine. I was looking for a non nav one too but when I found mine I fell in love. The stock units just look "right". I have seen some aftermarket setups that looked clean but I would much rather just upgrade my HDD nav to DVD one with new ecu then add that ebay video input for dvd(Which I wouldn't need). Probably cost the same amount if not less than a new climate module+Dash Kit+Eclipse Head Unit+Install headache. Here's a link to the upgrade:

if you plan on getting aftermarket dvd, nav. just look for a car without nav, you will save money and have better sound.

So, as Dave and others mentioned, if you source an NON navi AC control unit, is it plug and play or will you have to custom the entire wiring and connectors? The reason I ask is I too probably would go for a non navi so I can replace the head unit, but if I find a good navi car that I can't pass up I may have to buy it I just want to make sure the NON navi AC control retrofit will not be too involving.

Vic, I don't know. I doubt you are going to find too many folks experienced with that because if they have Nav they typically don't go backwards to put in a non-Nav AC control... those that have pulled them out (only a couple) have put in newer version Navigation from GS430.
