Default For anyone who has welded the stock spoiler holes?

What kind of welder did you use? MIG or TIG? Also what are the steps?

Here's what I'm thinking...

1) Drill out studs/rivets from inside the trunk lid
2) Sand down around the area of the spoiler holes. (What grit sand paper should be used?)
3) Tack weld holes
4) Grind down weld and smooth it out
5) Wire brush welded area
6) Send to paint shop

This seems like a lot of work. Should I just pay a shop to do it? Or just wait around and see if anybody wants to trade trunk lids?

i would pay someone to do it. if you don't know how to weld very good you can warp the trunk metal, which will cost you more money to fix.

i would use bondo, or any kind of filler. its very forgiving and if you screw up u can do it again. Both ways are good, it all depends on your skill level. but i would just have some one do it, wont be too much more than just the paint anyways. because if they paint their going to have to prep it anyways. just my .02 (and if they screw it up they have to pay to fix it)

I thought it would be difficult to bondo the area because of the underside of the trunk lid? Isn't it protected by another sheet of metal so you can't work on the underside?

My friend does all the work on his Chevelle and his welds look very good-- all penny-stack welds.

well if you feel confident in your freinds skills that by all means let him do it. if you can do all the work. grind the welds (without gouging the sheetmetal) and do all the prep work, all the sanding, grinding, primer assuming you have a HVLP paint gun, and all the good stuff you could save about 100.

Good luck with you poject

Whether you do it or pay someone to do it I would weld the holes if you had a choice. I had body shop weld spoiler holes and emblem holes on one of my previous cars. Came out great. Unfortunately I don't know if the TIG or MIG welded it.

I'd be saving on average only $100? I thought shops charge way more than that for filling in spoiler holes. If I'm only saving $100, you'll know what I'll be doing then....

Thanks guys!

No way man. If you did all the welding, filling, prep, and painting yourself....that would save a huge chunk of money. Assuming you have all the tools or your frield will let you borrow them/use it at his shop, and don't factor in your time as labor charge(think of it as hobby time ) it will cost you about $150-200 for the paint/reducer/clear. You will still have about 50-70% paint left over to paint another bumper or body kit. Usually you buy paint in minimum quantities of 1/2 pint each of base/pearl and 1/2 quart each of reducer & clear. A shop will usually charge $400-500 to fill/repair/prep/paint the trunk lid. I'm talking about a quality shop here with paint booths and the worlks. If you believe your skills are up to par, then by all means do it youself. If you have any doubt of your skills...even the slightest doubt, then take it to a shop.
