Interior lamp doesn't work when Rear doors are ajar.
Neither does the "door ajar" indicator in the dash. It only works for the fronts. I did a search and found it in the door actuator thread but th ethread didn't really answer the symptom. Is this the problem???

It is defective door actuator. Some '98 rolled off the line with bad parts. I caught mine within warranty period.
If you have children in the back, it can be a safety issue.

yeah I called a buddy who is a lexus tech yesterday and he said there was a TSIB on it and he is going to see if they can comp it to me as a good faith thing. My dome light works fine with the front doors it's just the rears and the worse thing is that the dash lights don't indicate it either. I have my kids back there and they grab everything. I guess I will see if Lexus will fix if not I will change them out myself. I guess Ican also in the meantime lock the child safety locks on the doors....

What needs replacing is the whole lock/latch assembly. I dont know how easy/difficult it is and if there is a need to adjust the new piece.
The door ajar indicator is not a substitute for child-lock as it does not prevent chidren from opeining up the door. See the suttle difference. It really tells the driver "not to drive off" as the door is not closed. Till you fix the problem, you will have to look back and ensure the rear doors are closed.
