I dealt with a TON of tree sap last summer, parked beneath a pine that had had several limbs cut days before. It was awful. And I didn't have a chance to remove it until it had hardened.
I tried everything: rubbing alcohol, turpentine, xylene (which dissolves sap really well but also removes paint -- worked fine on glass, though).
Denatured alcohol was the answer.
It dissolves the sap with minimal rubbing and does nothing to the paint.
Just make sure you wash and wash afterwards.
