Default 45k Service- Dealer or Independent Shop?

I have a 2003 GS300 and my 45k service is coming up. I called a couple of the dealers here in Houston and they want $500.00 for this!

Would you guys recommend me spending the extra money and going to Lexus, or should I use an independent shop? I think that an independent shop would cost about half (~$250.00).

Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

I personally don't go to the dealer as I know mechanics all over the place that are much better than the dealers... It's not NECESSARY, plus if you know a good mechanic, it's good to keep a good relations with them, I'm a part time mechanic myself so there are a lot of things you can DIY also...

If you don't know of a reputable shop, take it to the dealer.
The price comes with a peace of mind, plus it'll be log in your service book for evidence if you decide to sell the car later. You also get a loaner too if you need to be on your way.

If you want to save on the cost, find out what is actually being done and ask the dealer to do just those: oil change, rotate tires, etc...versus "inspections".
