You know, I've got to hand it to the 98 GS400, shortly after the GS became the world's fastest 4 door production sedan, came the E55, M5, Jag XLR.
I'd really like for Lexus to jump back into the HP wars again.

I've seen those e55's burn rubber matter of fact the clk55 amg burned some rubber to. I remember reading about the GS in MT I thought at the time Lexus was going to bring out some high performance Luxury cars.

Almost 12 years later, they will.. The "F" line. GS-F?? Who knows when.. I recall seeing the GS400 on Motortrend televison being tested back in 97/98, and that test car burned some serious rubber... Smoke for days... I'm curious if Motortrend has archived test video That would be great to see once again..

I remember writing a mail to Toyota for that ad back when it came out b/c the Lotus Carlton does 0-60 in like 4.5 seconds. Their response was something like
"it is the fastest sedans in the United States" or something like that. but then again, they ignore the Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo (and maybe W124 500E). I still think to this day thats false advertisement...but whatever. its a damn nice car.

1998 JXR does 0-60 in 5.2 while GS4 is 5.7
SO XJR was the fastest, so that means GS was never the fastest

the 540i was also faster 0-60 (5.5 sec)
there are probably a dozen other sedans that are faster as well.
hell, modern day GM automatic sedans do 0-60 in a full second less than a GS400.

I think the 6-speed 540i was 5.5....automatic was about 6.0. Lexus wouldnt count the Alpina B10 and other aftermarket tuned cars they were just comparing it to the production sedans like 540i E430 etc. The jag may have also debuted as a 98...but i'm pretty sure the GS4 was out before it..so it was fastest automatic production sedan in the world for a short time. Of course since then cars have got much faster.

Also yall Edmunds got a 0-60 run of 5.5 seconds in the GS 400. No one got a quicker time
