Default help trany?

i know we cover3ed this alot of times but okay i just finished changing my trans fluid. i don't have a owners manual , dealer told me i need 4 qts. when i drained my old fluid , it only went into 3 quarts. how do you know when you put to much, the fluid is a little past hot after running car for 18 minutes, is it suppose to be between hot or just at the hot on the dipstick?

If you just drained and filled it. It will take about two and a half quarts. Start it up and let it warm up. Always check the fluid when the engine is fully warmed up. The fluid level will come up when warm. The proper level at this point should be at the hot full mark. If it is still low, top it off. It should not be past the hot full mark. Good luck!

2.5 quarts would overfill mine. mine takes 2 quarts and about 1/8 of the third quart.

Warming up at standstill basically warms up the engine block. After making sure you have at least the minimum, drive around 10-15 minutes to warm up the transmission.

One more thing, Rove the gear stick to all possible postions and stay in each for 30 sec or so. [You dont need to be driving for this .. hold the brake]. This ensures all chambers get filled with transmission fluid.

Lastly:
Your engine should be idling (running) and shifter in "P" when you check the trans-fluid.

Great points guys. There are other variables involved in this. Like how long you let it drain, and did you drop the pan. Yes, running it through the gears would also be a good idea, but not as crutial if your just doing a drain and fill. That is why you wait till engine and trans is at normal operating temps. before pulling the dipstick for the final step.
