If there is more filtration area to pass the same volume of oil there will be less restriction period. Ideally you want as little restriction as possible at the oil filter, it's just a choking point in the system. So much so that many higher quality oil filters have a bypass valve inside to let the oil freeflow when there is too much restriction. When you go WOT, the filter opens the bypass valve and lets the oil thru without passing it through the restrictive filter. With a bigger filter you also get the advantage of putting more oil in the system. More oil in the system = more oil to suspend and trap all the contaminants.
Plenty of the corvette guys have been running bigger than stock filters for a while with no problems. I got the idea of the bigger filter from one of my buddies with a Z06. He's had no problems so far
There's nothing wrong with using a large filter. The difference in filter housing is not large enough to worry about pressure drop. We're talking about maybe 0.1L of a difference.
I've been running the longer filter on every 2JZ and 1UZ/3UZ since 2 years ago and no problems. The larger filter does not cost any more than the normal size at your local auto parts store.

thanks jeff any other part numbers besides the k&n ??
I've ran the yzzd3 filter (slightly taller than yzzd1) on the 2jz before, but never tried an aftermarket filter like this before. OEM filters are rated for 7500 miles give or take. I think i might give this a try next time as well.
