K&N Filter: Cheapest Vendor
#19
Just to update... I got my $55.00 K&N from Ebay yesterday for my wife's GS300. It realy made a decent difference. Ofcourse I replaced a dirty, bug-filled OEM filter. What I realy noticed was how much smoother the power band was. Before at higher RPMs the car could not breathe as well so when the car shifted and went to a lower (less air consuming) RPM it was a little jerky. Now the car feels as if it has one long gear. I can't beleive I waited 1.5 years to get this. (Don't expect to pull Supras with this mod )
FWIW I put a K&N in my wifes RX300 AWD and went from 18 mpg with a clean OEM filter to 23 MPG on the highway. And gained some pick up too.

K&N Air Filter Sealing Grease: Part # 99-0703-1
(Verbatim from the back of the tube)
-Hi-Temp. Grease won't run off
-Seals against air leaks
-Prevents dirt intake (iunno wat the he!! that means)
Instructions:
Use whenever installing or replacing air filter element. Spread a liberal amount around rubbber seal where it contacts air cleaner housing or air box. DO NOT use on "clamp-on" type filters.
Now my question. First of all, does the 2GS300 use a clamp on air filter application/housing? I know lots of people are afraid of gettin oil in their MAF from over-oiling. Wont GREASE in the MAF be worse? Anyone try this stuff?
I'm hesitant

OK, I tried the sealing grease. Basically, it does nothing. Its supposed to seal the actual filter onto the caged plastic housing that comes with the drop-in package that emulates the stock filter size in order for the drop-in (which is like 3 times thinner than the stock one) to fit snuggly into the intake housing and to clip on the plastic sliding that covers the intake opening.
The grease isnt really an adhesive, its more like, well, grease. It really didnt do anything and just made a mess. I advise not even using it. I wiped all of it off just in case it got into the MAF sensor.
You live and you learn, right? lol

I would never use a aftermarket filter again. I bought a K&N off of ebay.
It was letting so much dirt pass through it I had to have my MAF sensor replaced.
One day my car started to shift funny. I thought I had a trans problem. My local lexus dealer could not find the problem. The MAF sensor was so dirty and corroded it was sending the wrong sigianls to the computer. No there was no check engine lights and the computer had no error codes. We tried to clean the MAF sensor but ended up having to replace it to get rid of the problem. As soon as lexus installed a new sensor the car drove/shifted perfect again. The $50.00 filter ended up costing me $250.00.
I am sure it is not worth the extra 1 to 2 hp you might get to let more dirt in.
P.S. I have a TRD filter cleaning kit if anyone wants to buy it.
