Has anyone done DIY on a alternator ?

I pulled mine over the weekend when I was changing my timing belt.
I didnt realize how easy it was and I am sick now that I paid $800 at a local shop to get it done 2 years ago.
He is right when he says you must pull the power steering pump pully. That is easy, though. I stuck a pair of pliers in backwards with one handle in a hole. Then I turned it until they got caught on the pump. Then I loosened the bolt.
After the bolt is removed. Pull the pulley off. (it may take some wiggling off, but just make sure you dont bend it)
Then there is a nut on top of the alternator... Then A long bolt at the bottom where I think the ground goes in... I cannot remember. Then from there, look for any more bolts on it and pull it..
The belt is easy to pull, just put a wrench on the tension pulley and move it to the left to give you enough slack to remove the belt. After that, you're good to go.... ( do this first)
Definitely do it from the bottom. I cannot believe I paid $800 to get it done...
I am a sucker for trusting my mechanic. I didnt want to bother with pulling as much as they said was involved. Oh well.. Good luck man.. If you have any questions shoot me a message. GL

Thanks dcz
I was downtown Chicago this past Saturday (40 miles from home and it was -3 outside). The alternator died out and we were stuck, luckily my friend was down there on a date and we sat in his Avalanche till we figured out what to do, ended up just pushing the car into a pay lot and then had it towed the following day.
Ordered an alternator from eBay for $130, cheapest I found at a local autoparts store was $230 so I think I did good
