looking into a lex gs400
...title says it. Coming from a bmw m3 but wanting to sell for a more of a cruiser then a race/performance car. Looking at a few second gen gs400s. What should I be looking for as far as known things that break on that car? Are there alot of diff things? Supposedly Lexus' are more reliable cars then bimmers. Any info is appreciated.

Here's what I was told when I was looking at my GS430. All may apply for a 400. Thanks to BossGS4 and Kharizma for the info:
lower ball joints
outer tie rods
upper control arms [if they're bad]
new tires
alignment
check all fluids
Crank the heater
Crank the A/C
Look for evidence of moisture on the carpet near the firewall (leaky condenser $1000+ repair)
Sunroof rattle could be from roof itself or shade
Check for headlight condensation
Should have 4 keys
~ 2 X Master Keys
~ 1 X Valet
~ 1 X Wallet
All Owner's Manuals Intact ?
Full toolkit (espcially the WHEEL LOCK)
Full First Aid Kit
A search of this site could lead to more items.

Were you having reliability issues with the M3? I was looking into an M3 but the stories I hear about them being reliable scares me. Costly repairs when out of warranty, etc. I take Lexus reliability for granted. A 150k mile GS400 is more reliable then a 30k mile BMW.

I would go with the GS. Since you want something to "cruise" in, plus it has the potential to be pretty quick when modded right. I think it a GS is a car that anyone can tailor to suit their needs.

BCP43002, thanks for the info. I might have to suscribe to this for future reference. So basically besides the same thing you'd look for in any car there aren't any cummon things to look for specifically in GS cars?
coco-bun, yes I bet. But I want out of the bumpy stiff suspension, busy hand shifting...etc I'd rather not tear it down to stock form neither...a boats fine with me.
dashocker, no, a '97...e36 m.
gapxguy, I wouldn't say it wasn't reliable because I take it everwhere even for long distances without fear of it letting me down. More of little things like the digital climate control acting up and brake light circuits going bad... etc. I guess that's why japan makes most our electronics and not germany. As far as repairs go I fix my own car so I couldn't say really.
