It basically just starts the car in second gear so you can have better traction because you can floor it and not accelerate.

sometimes you have to turn it all off in the snow because you need more power to move. but in a few inches of snow i use it everytime here in colorado.

I have not had a chance to do it but I will try. The GS is my second car so I try not to drive in wet weather. I live in SC so we do not get much snow.

What happens if you get the wheels spinning and continue to mash the gas? Will the TCS kick in and kill the engine or can you smoke them? Of course I am saying that I will leave the VSC on.
Any comments?

It adjusts the valves so that they only open a certain percentage so that even if you mash the gas the car won't take off as fast.

When the VSC starts kickin in it will literally stop the wheels if there is too much spin. You just won't be able to move.

I was wondering what was going on when I switch it to snow mode while cruising at about 50mph.

I don't think it actually adjusts the valves, it just lowers the sensitivity of the throttle position sensor so if you push the pedal down 1/2 way you are only getting 30% throttle vs. normally it's opening 50%.

Can anyone confirm that it starts the car in 2nd? If so, does that mean when you stop the car stays in 2nd and does not downshift to 1st?

I am attempting to troubleshoot something and knowing this information about Snow Mode would be of much help. Thank you.

iv also noticed that when you switch it into "M" and use the buttons on the steering wheel it does not shift down to 1st gear and can only go from 2-5.

I've put my car into snow mode at random points to see what it would do. When you accelerate in Snow Mode, the car feels VERY sluggish and almost like you are towing something extremely heavy. You can tell the difference if you switch between Snow Mode and regular under normal acceleration. The difference is quite substantial.

1st gear is unavailable and VVT-i doesn't advance the cams.

I thought that 1st gear was ONLY available when you gate shifted. Never through the E-shift.
