Default Gate Shifting

Sometimes when I gate shift from say L and then bang it over to 2 right before redlining the tranny like hesitates or doesnt want to shift into 2.Ive had similar experiences from 2 to 3.It definately does not feel or sound healthy for the tranny.Has anyone else had similar experiences.

And...tests have shown that gate shifting (or E-shifting) on acceleration is actually slower than letting the trans upshift for you.

I use gate shifting a lot to downshift for passing and cornering, but then I put in back in D to let the trans upshift itself. If you enjoy choosing the gears on the way up go for it...just so you know you're slowing your acceleration down.

I use gate shifting to hold 1st gear when around a corner or turn so the trans does not upshift to second. Then I push it all the way up and e-shift the rest of the way. If you wait too long to upshift then the car will redline and the car will cutout, that is probably the hesitation your speaking off as it takes a while to register the upshift when doing so manually. Took out the neighbors kids Mustang GT twice last week doing this. Pretty easy kill both times. 215hp 5 sp. version. Funny as I took out his fathers new Billet (Bullet?) Mustang the week prior ,very close though.

I think both RealMarty and mayandoom are correct about what's happening. Gateshifts are slower and I also think you hit the limiter as a result, slowing things down even further while the engine ECU did it's thing since it probably dropped your revs for you before it upshifted.
